La polizia di Belfast sta indagando sulla fotografia che ritrae una bambina di circa 5 anni con l’acronimo settario “KAT” (“Kill All Taigs”, Uccidere tutti i cattolici), dipinta sulla fronte.
La bambina ha una bandiera dell’Unione sulla guancia e “KAT” in blu, bianco e rosso dipinta sulla fronte. La fotografia, comparsa sui maggiori social network e sui siti Internet repubblicani, sarebbe stata scattata durante la notte dei bonfire (l’11 luglio) a North Belfast.
La scritta “KAT” (“Kill All Taigs” – Taigs è il termine dispregiativo usato dai lealisti per indicare i cattolici) o “ATAT” (“All Taigs Are Targets” – Tutti Taigs sono bersagli), appaiono di sovente nelle aree lealiste dell’Irlanda del Nord.
Un portavoce delle polizia nordirlandese ha spiegato: “La PSNI ha ricevuto un’informativa; verrà svolta un’inchiesta per stabilire se sono stati commessi reati”.
La madre del bambino non era presente alla festa quando si è verificato l’incidente. Ha detto all’Irish News che i bambini si stavano dipingendo a vicenda gli slogan sul volto.
Ha riferito al quotidiano di Belfast: “I bambini avevano i colori per il viso e li hanno utilizzati.
“Lo vedono spesso scritto sui muri della nostra zona.
“Ho amici e familiari provenienti da entrambi i lati della comunità.
“Non ero alla festa, quindi non sapevo cosa ci fosse scritto sul suo viso fino a quando non ho finito di lavorare.
“Se fossi stata lì i bambini non se le sarebbero fatte.
“È stata una cosa di bambini e lo si vede da come è stato scritto.
“Le ho chiesto cosa significasse e mi ha detto «Bacia e parla» (Kiss And Tell, Ndt) – lei non comprende”.
La madre ha aggiunto che i nonni della bambina hanno contratto un matrimonio misto. Ha aggiunto: “È una cosa vergognosa mettere questa foto sui siti repubblicani.
“La situazione è sfuggita di mano”.
Naomi Long, numero due di Alliance Party, ha detto di trovare le fotografie “assolutamente deprimenti e scioccanti” e sono “un triste indizio della nostra società”.
Ha detto che “esporre questa giovane ragazza a questa forma di settarismo e di odio è un abuso di minore.
“È già incredibile che qualcuno possa ritenere accettabile scrivere questo messaggio sul volto di una persona, figuriamoci su quello di una bambina.
“Purtroppo, non è un episodio isolato. Abbiamo già visto bambini vestiti in abiti paramilitari in posa con repliche di armi, per esempio”.
Questa non è la prima volta che il messaggio settario è venuto a galla nello scorso fine settimana, quando i lealisti nordirlandesi hanno celebrato la vittoria del re protestante Guglielmo d’Orange sul re cattolico Giacomo II nella battaglia del Boyne, nel 1690.
Su un falò in Anderson Crescent a Limavady, Derry, un enorme cartello esortava a “uccidere tutti i cattolici”. Era posizionato insieme ai manifesti elettorali dei consiglieri dello Sinn Féin Brenda Chivers e Rory Donaghey, e a quelli di Alex Attwood, SDLP. La polizia ha rimosso i manifesti prima che il bonfire venisse incendiato.

Police investigate photo of little girl with Catholic death threat face paint
Police in Belfast are investigating a photo of a five-year-old girl with the sectarian acronym “KAT” (“Kill All Taigs,” a derogatory term for Irish Catholics) painted on her forehead.
The young girl is photographed with a Union flag painted on her cheek and “KAT” in red, white and blue on her head. The photograph, which emerged on social media and republican websites, is believed to have been taken during an Eleventh night bonfire in north Belfast.
The slogans “KAT” (“Kill All Taigs”) or “ATAT” (“All Taigs Are Targets”) commonly appear in graffiti in loyalist areas in Northern Ireland.
A Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) spokesman added: “Police have received a report, enquiries will be carried out to establish if any offenses have been committed.”
The child’s mother was not at the party when this incident occurred. She told the Irish News the children were painting the slogan on each other.
She told the Belfast newspaper, “The kids got the paints and wrote on it.
“They see it all the time sprayed all over the walls in the area.
“I have friends and family from both sides of the community.
“I wasn’t at the party, so I didn’t know what was on her head until I finished work.
“If I’d been there the kids would not have it on their heads.
“It was kids messing about and you can tell by the way it is written.
“I asked her what it meant and she said ‘kiss and tell’ – she doesn’t understand, God love her.”
The mother added that the five-year-old’s grandparents are in a mixed marriage. She added, “It is a disgrace people are taking it upon themselves to put this on republican sites.
“It has gotten out of hand.”
Naomi Long, Deputy Leader of the Alliance party said she finds the images “utterly depressing and shocking” and said it is a “sad indictment of our society.”
She said, “To expose this young girl to this form of sectarianism and hatred is child abuse.
“It beggars belief that anybody would believe it is acceptable to write this message on a person’s face, let alone a young child.
“Sadly, it isn’t an isolated incident. We have previously seen children dressed in paramilitary garb posing with replica weapons, for example.”
This is the not the first time this sectarian slogan popped up this weekend as Protestants celebrated the victory of Protestant king William of Orange over Catholic King James II at the Battle of the Boyne, in 1690.
On a bonfire at Anderson’s Crescent, in Limavady, Derry, a huge placard emblazoned “Kill All Taigs” was set to burn with election posters of Sinn Fein councillors Brenda Chivers and Rory Donaghey, and the SDLP’s Alex Attwood. Police removed the posters.
