Bomb ‘could have cost lives’

COMPONENTS used in the making of a large bomb have been discovered by police.

Psni: strada chiusa - road closedSenior PSNI officer, Chief Inspector Alywn Barton confirmed the find after the latest security alert in Co Fermanagh.

An operation has been in place for six weeks in the border area after dissidents claimed they had left a device near Rosslea.

The alert ended on Wednesday and a number of items were taken away for examination after a farmer discovered a suspicious object on farmland.

Residents of three houses who had been moved from their homes have since been able to return.

Mr Barton blamed the incident on dissident republicans.

“This is a very strong example of how this small group of people are quite prepared to place very serious, very dangerous elements such as this close to property where people live,” he said.

“They have complete disregard for the fact that if these elements had exploded members of the public would have lost their lives.”

It was revealed on Thursday that security protection is to be reinforced at nearby Lisnaskea police station in the county, such is the dissident threat.
