Riportiamo il testo del comunicato rilasciato dalla famiglia di Kevin McDaid, assassinato a Coleraine da un gruppo di circa 40 lealisti. La famiglia chiede il silenzio stampa sulla faccenda, in questo “momento estremamente difficile”.

E’ stata una fonte di enorme forza per la nostra famiglia.
Desideriamo estendere i nostri sinceri ringraziamenti al personale del Causeway Hospital per l’esperienza e la sensibilità mostrata nel soccorrere il nostro amato Kevin nell’immediatezza del feroce e non provocato attacco che ha portato alla sua morte.
E’ un momento estremamente difficile per la nostra famiglia.
Abbiamo sofferto una perdita tragica ed improvvisa di un marito e padre.
L’angoscia per la perdita di Kevin è stata accresciuta dalla natura brutale della sua morte; ucciso sull’uscio di casa davanti alla propria famiglia.
L’indagine della polizia sull’omicidio di Kevin è in fase embrionale e non intendiamo pregiudicare tale inchiesta, facendo qualsiasi commento formale in relazione ad essa.
La famiglia è grata ai membri della polizia che hanno assistito Kevin dopo la raccapricciante aggressione ed a chi ha effettuato il massaggio cardiaco mentre si trovava morente ai nostri piedi.
Desideriamo appellarci alle persone affinché assistano la polizia nelle indagini sulla sua morte e sull’aggressione contro Damien Fleming in ogni maniera possibile.
La gente coinvolta in questo terribile attacco e che è penetrata domenica sera in Somerset Drive non merita alcuna forma di protezione, non sono amici di alcuna comunità.
La famiglia sta facendo un esposto formale al Police Ombudsman.
Apprezziamo che, per sua spontanea volontà, il comandante della polizia abbia già riportato la questione al Police Ombudsman per le indagini.
La famiglia desidera rendere chiare le proprie preoccupazioni sul fatto che, domenica 24 maggio 2009, la PSNI sia stata coinvolta in negoziati con alcune persone ritenute essere esponenti della comunità lealista.
La famiglia è preoccupata a proposito della natura di questi negoziati e della conseguente affermazione che minacce fossero state fatte da alcuni di questi individui verso la polizia, ossia che la violenza sarebbe scaturita qualora non fossero accolte alcune delle richieste presentate da loro.
E’ un principio fondamentale di una società civile che persone come quelle non debbano dettare i termini di ordine pubblico.
Siamo altresì turbati in quanto, nonostante la precedente conoscenza della minaccia, né noi né i nostri vicini siamo stati adeguatamente protetti dalla polizia.
Vogliamo che la comunità sostenga la polizia, ma nello stesso modo la polizia deve appoggiare la comunità.
Successivamente a questo abominevole omicidio e data la gravità delle condizioni di Fleming, le tensioni restano molto elevate.
Un’ulteriore minaccia di morte è stata fatta nei confronti della nostra famiglia.
Questa non dovrebbe essere il lascito della morte di Kevin.
Non è ciò che avrebbe voluto.
Kevin viveva per aiutare gli altri.
La sua breve vita è stata spesa nel tentativo di colmare il divario esistente nella nostra comunità.
La sua morte per mano di gente che non può offrire nulla alla nostra comunità non dovrebbe poter annullare il lavoro di tutta la sua vita.
I media e la stampa che hano visitato la nostra casa e ci hanno contattato sono stati cortesi e rispettosi.
Gli siamo grati per la gentilezza.
La famiglia tuttavia desidera non ci siano altri contatti con i media e che ci sia permesso di elaborare il lutto in pace.
Questo è un momento estremamente difficile e chiediamo gentilmente che questi desideri vengano rispettati”.

“This has been a source of enormous strength to the family.
“We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to the staff of the Causeway Hospital for the sensitive and expert way in which they dealt with our beloved Kevin in the aftermath of the vicious and unprovoked attack which led to his death.
“This is an extremely difficult time for our family.
“We have suffered the sudden and tragic loss of a husband and father.
“The anguish of Kevin’s loss has been heightened by the brutal nature of his death; murdered on his doorstep in front of his family.
“The police investigation into Kevin’s murder is at an early stage and we do not wish to prejudice that investigation, by making any formal comment in relation to same.
“The family are grateful to members of the PSNI who attended to Kevin after this horrific assault and who attempted to administer CPR as he lay dying at our feet.
“We would appeal to all persons to assist the police investigation into this murder and the attack on Damien Fleming in whatever way possible.
“The people involved in this murderous attack and who entered Somerset Drive on Sunday night do not deserve any form of protection, nor are they friends of any community.
“The family are making a formal complaint to the Police Ombudsman.
“We are appreciative that of his own volition the Chief Constable has already referred this matter to the Police Ombudsman for investigation.
“The family wish to make it clear that they are concerned that the PSNI were involved in negotiations with a number of persons perceived to be from the Loyalist community on Sunday the 24th of May 2009.
“The family are concerned regarding the nature of these negotiations and the attendant claim that threats were made by individuals from this background to police that violence would ensue unless certain demands made by them were met.
“It is a fundamental tenet of a civilised society that individuals such as these should not dictate the terms of law and order.
“We are further concerned that given the prior knowledge of the threat, neither we and nor our neighbours were not properly protected by police.
“We want the community to support the police, but equally police must also support the community.
“In the aftermath of this heinous murder and given the fragility of Mr Fleming’s condition, tensions remain extremely high.
“A further death threat has also been made against our family.
“This should not be the legacy of Kevin’s death.
“It is not what he would have wanted.
“Kevin lived helping others.
“His short life was spent trying to bridge the divide that exists in our community.
“His death at the hands of people who have nothing to offer our community should not be allowed to undo his life’s work.
“The media and press who have attended our family home and contacted ourselves have been courteous and respectful.
“We are most grateful for their kindness.
“The family would however wish that there should be no further media contact and we be allowed to grieve quietly in peace.
“This is an enormously difficult time and we would ask kindly that those wishes should be respected.”
