Notizie contraddittorie sono circolate tra i mezzi d’informazione nelle ultime settimane, con alcuni suggerimenti secondo cui i membri di North Antrim e Londonderry avrebbero seguito la strada tracciata dal gruppo di Belfast, mettendo fuori uso le armi, mentre altre voci parlavano di una frattura con le posizioni adottate dai lealisti di Belfast.
Il rifiuto di ulteriori discussioni da parte dell’Ulster Political Research Group di North Antrim e Londonderry con i politici e con la PSNI riflette lo stato d’animo della maggioranza degli appartenenti a UDA, ha fatto sapere la fonte.
“La situazione potenzialmente volatile in zone come Rasharkin, il Fountain a Londonderry ed altre aree, così come la minaccia dei repubblicani ci rende ancora più determinati a trattenere ciò che abbiamo.
“Ci sono forti opinioni secondo cui il lealismo è stato svenduto. Siamo stati creati per difendere in nostro paese e quello è il motivo per qui siamo ancora qui adesso”, dice la fonte.
Molti appartenenti all’UDA vedono la posizione presa dai loro colleghi di Belfast, che hanno acconsentito alla decommissioning a giugno, come in diretta opposizione a quanto pensa localmente la maggioranza.
Sentono di essere stati abbandonati dall’unionismo così come dalle forze di sicurezza e stanno chiedendo l’accoglimento di un certo numero di istanze.
“North Antrim e Lodonderry potrebbero condividere la stessa ideologia come altrove, ma siamo molto lontani da fornire il nostro pieno sostegno alle istituzioni.
“Quel giorno è ancora molto lontano”, ha proseguito l’uomo.
Comunque, secondo un altro punto di vista sull’argomento “smantellamento arsenali”, mentre c’è forte disillusione per le attuali strutture politiche tra molti lealisti, la presenza dello Sinn Fein nel governo è una realtà.
“Ci potremmo opporre alla conquista dei posti a Stormont da parte dello Sinn Fein, ma è un fatto che sono là e ci sono per restare”.

Majority UDA members in Ballymoney opposed to decommissioning
Contradictory reports have been circulating in the media in recent weeks with some suggesting that North Antrim and Londonderry members will follow the lead set by Belfast and put weapons out of use, while others report a rift with the stance adopted by loyalists in Belfast.
The North Antrim and Londonderry Ulster Political Research Group‘s refusal to engage in any further discussions with mainstream politicians as well as the PSNI, reflects the mood of the majority of UDA members, the source said.
“The potentially volatile situation in the likes of Rasharkin, the Fountain in Londonderry and other areas as well as the threat from Dissidents makes us more determined to hold on to what we have got.
“There is a strong view that loyalism has been sold out. We were created to defend our country and that’s the way it will stay at the present time,” the source said.
Many members of the UDA view the position taken by their Belfast colleagues, who subscribed to decommissioning in June, as in direct opposition to the majority thinking locally.
They feel they have been let down by unionism as well as the security forces and are urging that a number of issues are addressed.
“North Antrim and Londonderry may share the same ideology as elsewhere, but we are a long way of giving our full support to the Institutions.
“That day is a long way off,” he said.
However, according to another view on the decommissioning issue, while there is disillusionment with the current political structures amongst many loyalists, the presence of Sinn Fein in Government is a reality.
“We may be opposed to Sinn Fein taking up their seats at Stormont, but it is a fact that they are there and are there to stay.”
