La parata non passa vicino a dove fu ucciso McDaid

Una parata lealista giudicata controversa che doveva passare vicino alla scena di un omicidio settario ha cambiato percorso, è stato riferito oggi (ieri, NdT).

Le bandiere unioniste sono state rimosse dall’Orange Order vicino al luogo in cui Kevin McDaid fu picchiato a morte in un quartiere di Coleraine.

La parata della loggia di Killowen in ricordo della Battaglia della Somme avrà luogo mercoledì.

Un portavoce ha comunicato: “I membri della Killowen L.O.L. 930 hanno sentito che questo è un gesto appropriato, che dovrebbe venire accettato da tutte le persone coinvolte come un tentativo genuino e sincero di allentare qualsiasi tensione, paura o preoccupazione comunitaria che potrebbero esistere lungo il percorso della parata”.

I residenti lealisti e nazionalisti sono coinvolti in un teso punto morto riguardo all’innalzamento di bandiere unioniste.

Ma oggi l’ordine lealista ha annunciato una serie di passi per far placare la rabbia.

Non ci sarà la marcia lungo Somerset Drive, che fu il cuore delle violenze di maggio, quando un altro uomo, Damian Fleming, fu lasciato a combattere per la vita.

La musica sarà volontariamente ridotta ed i sostenitori non saranno ammessi nell’area. Vietato anche il consumo di alcol.

Il parlamentare nazionalista dello SDLP John Dallat ha detto che “gli sforzi per raggiungere il consenso non sono stati aiutati dalla decisione di erigere le bandiere in quella zona, la scorsa notte, ma non vuol dire che non dovremmo giungere ad un compromesso”.

Secondo il politico la parata dovrebbe evitare anche di transitare nella vicina Pates Lane.

Il parlamentare ha detto di aver chiesto un incontro all’Orange Order ma di non aver ricevuto risposta.

Parade near McDaid murder re-routed

A contentious loyal order parade past the scene of a sectarian murder in Northern Ireland has been rerouted, it was revealed today.

Union flags were removed by the Orange Order near where Kevin McDaid was beaten to death on a housing estate in Coleraine, Co Derry last month.

Killowen lodge’s Somme remembrance parade takes place on Wednesday.

A spokesman said: “It is felt by the members of Killowen L.O.L. 930 that this is an extremely appropriate gesture which should be accepted by all concerned as a sincere and genuine attempt to ease any potential community tensions, fears, or worries which may exist along the parade route.”

Loyalists and nationalist residents were involved in a tense stand-off in the town over the union flags and bunting last night.

But today the loyal order announced a range of steps designed to defuse anger.

There will be no walk along Somerset Drive, which was at the heart of May’s violence, which also left another man, Damian Fleming, battling for life.

Music will be restricted voluntarily and supporters will not be allowed into the contentious area. No alcohol will be allowed.

Nationalist SDLP Assembly member John Dallat said: “Efforts to reach consensus were not helped by the decision to erect flags in that area last night but that doesn’t mean we should not try to reach a compromise.”

He said the parade should be banned from nearby Pates Lane as well.

The MLA said he had asked for talks with the Orange Order but received no response.
