La PSNI “mi ha reso la vita un inferno” con 400 stop-and-search

Un repubblicano ha subito 400 fermi e perquisizioni negli ultimi 3 anni

Un uomo accusa la PSNI di molestie dopo essere stato fermato e perquisito quasi 400 volte nel corso degli ultimi tre anni.

Il repubblicano di Newry, che desidera rimanere anonimo, ha detto che la polizia lo ferma in media una volta ogni due giorni e mezzo e afferma che gli agenti stanno abusando dei lori poteri.

Secondo l’uomo la PSNI sta conducendo una campagna di “polizia politica” contro di lui e ha tenuto tutte le “ricevute” delle perquisizioni per dimostrarlo.

Ha spiegato al Sunday Mirror (il 7 aprile): “Mi sto allenando per partecipare ad alcune maratone per raccogliere fondi da destinare al PIPS, l’ente di sensibilizzazione sui suicidi. Stavo raccogliendo sponsorizzazioni lo scorso martedì, quando sono stato fermato e perquisito di nuovo. I moduli di sponsorizzazione sono stati presi e gli agenti hanno controllato chi mi stava aiutando economicamente.

“Sono stato torturato, e non sono l’unico. Anche un mio amico è stato fermato quasi quanto me.

“Se questo fosse accaduto a degli stranieri ci sarebbero dei disordini razziali. È una disgrazia. È polizia politica – l’idea di fare i prepotenti ed intimidire. Non sono mai stato condannato, tranne che per una cosa avvenuta quando avevo 17 anni. Adesso ne ho 37, ho un lavoro e non sono coinvolto in alcuna attività militante. Non sono membro dello Sinn Fein né di qualche altro gruppo.

“È un comportamento ostile. Perché queste risorse non vengono dirette contro la gente che vende droghe o attacca gli anziani?”

Stephen Murney, portavoce di éirígí per Newry, afferma di essere stato fermato e perquisito dozzine di volte. E aggiunge: “Ci sono circa 18 persone – repubblicani – che subiscono regolarmente stop-and-search”.

Prosegue il repubblicano: “Se hai un’opinione ed un credo politico differente allora sarai fermato e perquisito. Questa è polizia politica”.

Secondo gli ultimi numeri a disposizione, 554 persone hanno subito stop-and-search nella zona di Newry e Mourne tra l’1 ottobre ed il 31 dicembre 2011. Più di 2.100 persone sono state fermate e perquisite, sempre nella stessa area, nel corso di tutto il 2011.

Un portavoce della PSNI afferma: “La PSNI mette in opera del processi per assicurarsi che i poteri di stop-and-search sia utilizzati adeguatamente. Chiunque abbia una denuncia da fare, può presentarla all’ufficio del Police Ombudsman per un’indagine completa”.

A man accuse the PSNI of harassment after being stopped and searched around 400 times over the least three years.

The Newry republican, a father-of-three who wishes to remain anonymous, says the police have been stopping him on average one every two-and-a-half days and has accused them of abusing their powers.

He claims the PSNI is waging a campaign of “political policing” against him and says he has blue search slips, given to hime by officers, to prove it.

He told the Sunday Mirror yesterday: “I’m training to do a few marathons to raise money for suicide awareness charity PIPS. I was collecting sponsorship money last Tuesday and I was stopped and searched again. The sponsorship forms was taken and they were looking at who had sponsored me.

“I’m being tortured and I’m not the only one. My friend has also been stopped around the same number of times as me.

“If this was happening to foreign nationals there’d be race riots. It’s a disgrace. It’s political policing – the idea to bully and intimidate. I haven’t been convicted of anything, except for something way back when I was 17. I’m 37 now, in full time employment and I’m not employed in any militant activity. I’m not a member of SInn Fein or any other grouping.

“It’s hostile behaviour. Why aren’t their resources directed against people selling drugs or attacking old people?”

Stephen Murney, a éirígí spokesman for Newry, claimed he has also been stopped and searched dozens of times, and added: “There are around 18 people – republicans – who are stopped and search on regular basis.”

He added: “Because you hold an opinion and hold a political belief that means you’ll get stopped and search – now that’s political policing.”

According to the lates figures available 554 people were searched in the Newry and Mourne by police between October 1, to December 31, 2011. Over 2,100 people were stopped and searched during last year in the same area.

A police spokesman said: “The PSNI has processes in place to ensure that Stop and Search powers are used properly. Any member of the public who has a complaint should take it to the Police Ombudsman’s Office for a full investigation.”
