La polizia in Fermanagh ha noleggiato un elicottero privato per appoggiare le operazioni di sicurezza sul terreno

Ad inizio anno l’allora comandante della PSNI, Hugh Orde, aveva ricevuto un finanziamento aggiuntivo da utilizzare per una copertura extra con un elicottero.
L’assistente Jones ha riferito che la decisione di noleggiare un elicottero era stata presa dai comandanti locali alla luce della loro valutazione sulla sicurezza.
I repubblicani sono stati molto attivi in Fermanagh e a luglio la polizia ha impiegato più di 12 ore per intervenire in seguito ad una rapina a causa del livello di minaccia nella zona.
La PSNI stava pianificando l’acquisto di un secondo elicottero alla luce della persistente minaccia dei repubblicani.
Militari
Il parlamentare UUP per Fermanagh e South Tyrone, Tom Elliott, ha detto che ora c’è “un forte bisogno” di utilizzare un elicottero militare per sorvolare la zona di Fermanagh e dei suoi dintorni.
“Senza dubbio viviamo in tempi pericolosi. Il personale di polizia sta affrontando la grave minaccia dei repubblicani, e non vorrei mai fare qualcosa che possa mettere le loro vite in pericolo”, ha affermato.
“Tuttavia, sento di dover porre domande sul continuo utilizzo di un elicottero privato mentre ritengo che utilizzare un velivolo militare sarebbe meglio, in quanto meglio equipaggiato e più idoneo alle operazioni eseguite dalla PSNI e che richiedono un sostegno aereo.
“Chiederò ai miei colleghi di partito nel Policing Board di portare questo suggerimento per la sicurezza degli agenti e spero valuteranno in maniera adeguata la proposta”.
Gli elicotteri militari erano una visione quotidiana nelle aree di confine durante i Troubles.

Private helicopter used by police
The police in Fermanagh have been chartering a private helicopter to back up security operations.
It has cost a total of just over £52,000.
Earlier this year the then Chief Constable Hugh Orde said the PSNI had received additional funding which would be used for extra helicopter cover.
The Asst Chief Constable said the decision to charter the helicopter is taken by local commanders in the light of their security assessments.
Dissident republicans have been active in Fermanagh and in July police took more than 12 hours to attend a robbery because of the threat level in the area.
The PSNI are understood to planning to buy a second helicopter in light of the continuing dissident threat.
Military
Fermanagh and South Tyrone MLA Tom Elliott said there was now “a strong case” for a military helicopter to service Fermanagh and wider area.
“Undoubtedly we are living in dangerous times. Police personnel are facing a severe threat from dissident republicans, and I would never under any circumstances want to do anything to put their lives at risk,” he said.
“However, I feel I have to question the continuing use of private helicopter firms as I believe that the use of military helicopters would be better equipped and more cost effective for the operations carried out by the PSNI which require air support.
“I will be asking my party colleagues on the Policing Board to put this suggestion forward to the security officials and I hope that they will evaluate the proposal accordingly.”
Military helicopters were a common sight in border areas of Northern Ireland during the Troubles.
