Nel corso di 30 anni di conflitto in Irlanda del Nord, più di 3.500 persone sono state uccise. Tra di loro ci sono 16 persone scomparse – i cosiddetti “disappeared” – le cui famiglie non hanno un corpo da seppellire.
L’Assemblea nordirlandese ieri ha dibattuto sugli sforzi da compiere per portare un aiuto a queste famiglie.
Negli ultimi anni sono stati compiuti progressi nelle ricerche degli “scomparsi”, con il ritrovamento di 9 corpi delle vittime, i cui resti sono stati riconsegnati alle famiglie per una degna sepoltura.
Tuttavia all’appello mancano ancora sette vittime.
“Mentre sono stati fatti molti progressi nell’individuazione dei resti dei disappeared, molto resta da fare e può essere compiuto se la gente si presenta alla Commissione con le informazioni sul luogo di sepoltura dei resti delle vittime”, afferma il parlamentare Dominic Bradley, SDLP.
“Alcune famiglie stanno ancora aspettando di dare ai loro cari un’adeguata sepoltura cristiana ed è vitale che ottengano risposte e l’opportunità di dare eterno riposo ai loro amati”, ha spiegato. “Quelle famiglie hanno sofferto così tanto durante gli anni e meritano giustizia”.

Search for “disappeared” in Northern Ireland
In the 30 years of the Troubles in Northern Ireland, over 3,500 people were killed. Among those numbers were 16 people who were disappeared, meaning their families had no bodies to bury.
The Northern Ireland Legislative Assembly today debated the effort to help bring closure for these families.
In the past number of years progress has been made with nine of the 16 disappeared being successfully located and their bodies returned to their loved ones.
However, the remains of seven victims have still not been located.
“While a lot of progress has been made in locating the remains of disappeared victims, a lot more remains to be done and can be done if people come forward to the Commission with information about the location of victims’ remains.,” said MLA Dominic Bradley (SDLP)
“Some families are still waiting to give their loved ones a proper Christian burial and it is vital that they are given answers and the opportunity to lay their relative to rest,” he said. “These families have endured so much pain over the years and deserve some form of justice.”
