La richiesta: “Espellere Tom Elliott da Orange Order”

Il leader dell’UUP Tom Elliott deve essere espulso dall’Orange Order per aver partecipato al funerale dell’agente cattolico Ronan Kerr, chiede un cappellano dell’Ordine

Sebbene le regole dell’Orange Order proibiscano ai membri di partecipare a funzioni cattoliche, nessuna sanzione ufficiale è stata presa.

David McCarthy fa parte dell’Orange Reformation Group, istituito pr riportare “il protestsntesimo nell’Orangismo”.

Il gruppo afferma: “Nessun protestante dovrebbe mai partecipare ad una funzione cattolica”.

“Orange Reformation estende la propria profonda vicinanza alla famiglia dell’agente Kerr, così brutalmente ucciso dall’IRA mentre si recava al lavoro.

“Tuttavia, siamo molto costernati per aver visto alcuni membri dell’Orange Order e cosiddetti protestanti evangelici partecipare al suo funerale, comportamento esplicitamente proibito dalle regole dell’istituzione.

“Le regole sono regole e devono essere difese”.

Un portavoce dell’Orange Order afferma che è stato giusto per la famiglia del poliziotto ucciso capire di avere il sostegno di ogni sezione della comunità.

Ha affermato: “Era importante che la famiglia Kerr comprendesse il vasto sostegno dato da tutta la comunità e l’Orange Order offre le proprie condoglianze per la perdita del loro coraggioso figlio”.

Elliott e l’ex numero due dell’UUP Danny Kennedy, anch’egli un orangista, hanno partecipato pubblicamente al funerale di Ronan Kerr tenutosi a Beragh la scorsa settimana.

Tom Elliott è stato Grand Master nella Contea di Fermanagh.

Orangeman: ‘Expel Tom Elliott over Ronan Kerr funeral’

UUP leader Tom Elliott must be expelled from the Orange Order for attending the funeral of murdered Catholic policeman Ronan Kerr, a clergyman has said.

Although the rules of the Orange Order prohibit members from attending Catholic Masses, no official sanction is being taken.

David McCarthy is a part of the Orange Reformation Group, set up to “put Protestantism back into Orangeism”.

The group said: “No Protestant should ever attend Roman Catholic worship.”

It said: “Orange Reformation extends its deepest sympathy to the family of Constable Ronan Kerr who was so brutally murdered by IRA as he went about his business.

“However, we were greatly dismayed to see some members of the Orange Order and so-called evangelical Protestants attend his funeral Mass, which is explicity forbidden in the rules of our institution.”

It added: “Rules are rules and they must be upheld.”

An Orange Order spokesman said it was right for the murdered policeman’s family to realise that they had support from every section of the community.

He said: “It was important that the Kerr family understood the widespread support for them throughout the community and the Orange Order offers its sincere sympathy to them on the loss of their brave son.”

Mr Elliott and the former UUP deputy leader Danny Kennedy, who’s also an Orangeman, publicly attended the funeral of Constable Kerr in Beragh last week.

Mr Elliott is a former county grandmaster of Fermanagh.
