Il costo dei disordini che hanno bloccato l’area di Ardoyne lo scorso mese è stato di quasi mezzo milione di sterline
I repubblicani sono stati accusati di aver istigato i disordini, durante i quali la polizia è stata oggetto di lanci di pietre e bottiglie incendiarie.
Un colpo di arma da fuoco è stato esploso contro gli agenti.
Il crescente costo per il controllo delle parate è stato fonte di frustrazione per il comandante della polizia Hugh Orde.
Il costo di tutte le operazioni di polizia collegate alla gestione delle parate è stata di 5 milioni di stelrine solo nell’ultimo anno.
I dettagli dei costi per gli incidenti di Ardoyne sono stati forniti al Policing Board dalla PSNI.
Il presidente del Board, Barry Gilligan, ha detto che notevoli risorse sono state legate alle parate.
“C’è una sostanziale fetta di risorse utilizzate per controllare le parate ed il costo dell’operazione di Ardoyne lo fa capire bene”, ha affermato.
“Ci sono risorse che potrebbero venire spese meglio, con il controllo delle comunità e per argomenti di sicurezza locale.
“E’ importante che le comunità continuino a lavorare insieme per raggiungere accordi sulle parate e molta gente, questa estate, ha investito del tempo per fare ciò. Il loro lavoro deve essere apprezzato.
“Comunque, come abbiamo avuto modo di testimoniare ad Ardoyne lo scorso mese e la scorsa settimana a Derry (parata degli Apprentice Boys), c’è una piccola minoranza intenta a provocare disordini e non c’è alcun dubbio che il costo di tali operazioni sottraggano fondi ai normali servizi di polizia”.

Ardoyne riots cost £422,000
The cost of policing the rioting that engulfed the Ardoyne area of north Belfast last month was almost half a million pounds.
Dissident republicans were blamed for stirring up trouble which saw police come under attack from petrol bombers and stone throwers.
At one point at the height of the rioting live rounds were fired at officers.
The substantial costs of policing parades is an ongoing source of frustration for chief constable Sir Hugh Orde.
The bill for all police operations linked to marches last year was £5m.
Details of the financial outlay for the Ardoyne incidents was provided to the Policing Board by the PSNI.
Board chair Barry Gilligan said valuable police resources were being tied up in parades.
“There is a substantial amount of resource used to police parades and the costs of the policing operation at Ardoyne show this,” he said.
“These are resources that could have been much better spent on community policing and dealing with local policing issues.
“It is important that communities continue to work together to reach resolution around parading issues and over the summer a lot of people have invested a lot of time in doing this. Their work is to be commended.
“However, as we witnessed at Ardoyne in July and at last week’s (Apprentice Boys) parade in Derry there are a small minority intent on causing trouble and there is no doubt that the cost of policing such disorder diverts resources away from normal policing duties.”
