La Union Jack del TUV blocca ancora una seduta del Consiglio a Limavady

L’incontro del Limavady Borough Council è stato sospeso per la seconda volta in meno di una settimana dopo che un consigliete del Traditional Unionist Voice ha portato in aula una bandiera inglese per protestare contro la nomina del sindaco dello Sinn Fein

L’incontro stato sospeso per oltre un’ora nella serata di lunedì dopo che Boyd Douglas aveva sventolato la bandiera, in spregio alla politica del Consiglio che vieta di portare in aula qualsiasi bandiera.

Il consigliere Douglas dice di voler obiettare alla nomina di Sean McGlinchey quale sindaco di Limavady.

McGlinchey ha scontato 18 anni per la partecipazione ad un’azione dell’IRA a Coleraine nel 1973, quando un’autobomba causò la morte di sei persone.

“Non credo avrò buoni rapporti di lavoro con Sean McGlinchey” afferma Douglas.

“Lui è l’uomo che viene criticato dall’elettorato unionista di Limavady”.

Douglas ha detto a Utv che è un “momento difficile” per le persone della zona.

“Domenica è stato l’anniversario della bomba di Coleraine di 38 anni fa, quando sei persone sono state fatte a pezzi e molte altre sono state ferite. Mi sentivo molto compassionevole quando ho parlato, avendo in mente le perdite di quelle famiglie”.

L’incontro è ripreso dopo che Douglas ha acconsentito a rimuovere la Union Jack.

Ma il consigliere del TUV non garantisce che non la porterà nuovamente in Consiglio.

“Manterrò il diritto di sventolare la bandiera quando mi sentirò di farlo. Non la utilizzerò in maniera irriverente, ma quando sentirò che serve a promuovere la mia causa”.

Durante l’ora di sospensione dei lavori, lo Sinn Fein ha cercato un parere legale. McGlinchey ha detto di non escludere la ricerca di ulteriori indicazioni.

“La questione è ancora in sospeso”, ha affermato a Utv. “Il consigliere Douglas ha dichiarato che metterà in mostra la bandiera ad ogni incontro ogni volta che lo vorrà.

“Stiamo cercando di costruire relazioni funzionanti per il bene di tutti”.

TUV flag row disrupts new meeting

A meeting of Limavady Borough Council was suspended for a second time in less than a week after a TUV councillor brought a small Union flag into the chamber in protest against the Sinn Féin mayor.

The meeting was put on hold for an hour on Monday evening after Boyd Douglas displayed the flag despite the council’s strict no-flags policy.

Councillor Douglas said he objects to the appointment of Sean McGlinchey as mayor of the borough council.

Mr McGlinchey served 18 years for the murder of six people in an IRA car bombing in Coleraine in 1973.

“It’s unlikely I will have any good working relationship with Sean McGlinchey,” said Mr Douglas.

“He’s a man who’s frowned upon by the unionist electorate of Limavady.”

Mr Douglas told UTV it was a “difficult time” for the people of the area.

“Sunday was the anniversary of the bomb in Coleraine 38 years ago when six people were blown to pieces and many others injured. I was very sympathetic in what I said bearing in mind the loss to those families.”

The meeting resumed after Mr Douglas agreed to take down the flag.

But the TUV councillor said he could not guarantee it will not be produced in the chamber again.

“I will hold the right to fly the flag when I feel I want to. I will not be using the flag in any flippant way, but when I feel it is promoting my cause.”

During the hour-long suspension, Sinn Féin sought legal advice. Mr McGlinchey says he cannot rule out seeking further guidance.

“The issue is still outstanding,” he told UTV. “Councillor Douglas did state he would put the flag up at any meeting any time that he wished.

“We are trying to build working relationships for the better of everybody.”
