La vedova del poliziotto Stephen Carroll dice di pregare quotidianamente per gli assassini del marito
“Prego per loro nella speranza che un giorno realizzeranno che ciò che stanno facendo non è giusto, e stanno solo demolendo delle vite”, ha detto.

“Mettetevi nei miei panni, immaginate come vi sentireste, se fosse qualcuno che amate davvero molto. Dubito abbiano mai amato veramente, altrimenti non avrebbero fatto questo”.
Il poliziotto Stephen Carroll venne ucciso dalla Continuity IRA, a marzo, nella cittadina di Craigavon.
L’agente fu colpito a sole 48 ore di distanza dall’agguato contro due soldati, uccisi dalla Real IRA davanti ad una caserma ad Antrim.
Kate Carroll ha riferito di avere ancora dolori atroci per la perdita.
“Il mio Giorno della Marmotta (Groundhog Day o Giorno della Marmotta è l’espressione anglosassone per parlare di un giorno ripetitivo, Ndt) è il lunedì”, rivela.
“Ogni lunedì rivivo ciò che è accaduto.
“Mentre le ore passano, il mio umore continua a peggiorare, perché guardo l’orologio, fino a quando arriva l’ora in cui Stephen venne ucciso – le 21:50.
“Semplicemente rivivo quel giorno ancora e ancora”.
Ma afferma di non essere più in collera con gli uomini che le hanno assassinato il marito.
“Non ho amarezza dentro di me. Mai avuta e mai nessuno su questa terra riuscrà a farmela venire. nessuno.
“Prego per loro. Loro non sono qui con me 24 ore al giorno, 7 giorni alla settimana.
“Se volessero indossare i miei panni per un giorno – un solo giorno… permetterebbe loro di vedere cosa hanno fatto”.
Ispirazione
Kate Carroll ha ricevuto il riconoscimento di Donna dell’Anno ad inizio mese, quale riconoscimento per il suo orgoglio ispiratore davanti all’omicidio del marito.
Ha ricevuto il premio nel giorno che sarebbe stato il quarantanovesimo compleanno di Stephen, un compleanno che aveva predetto di non riuscire a vedere.
Una Kate molto emozionata ha spiegato: “Suo padre morì quando aveva 49 anni e Steve pensava di non poter arrivarci… Non sapeva che gli avrebbero sparato”.
Kate e Stephen avrebbero festeggiato il 24° aniversario di matrimonio in agosto. Invece è stata una giornata tetra.
“Mi sono svegliata quella mattina ed ero completamente svuotata – non c’era Steve”, riferisce Kate.
“Avrebbe dovuto essere un giorno molto felice ed è stato uno dei peggiori della mia vita”.
Troppo sconvolta per visitare la tomba del marito, Kate ha insistito per piantare un albero nelo suo giardino come ricordo.
Ma la prossima estate si recherà all’Ashford Castle, dove lei e Stephen avevano pianificato di rinnovare la promessa di matrimonio per le nozze d’argento.
Ha detto che sarebbe stata la volontà di suo marito.

Carroll’s widow ‘prays for killers’
The widow of murdered police officer Constable Stephen Carroll has said she prays for his killers every day.
“I pray for them in the hope that one day they will come to the realisation that what they are doing is not right, and that they’re just wrecking lives,” she said.

“Put yourself in my shoes, see how you would feel, if it was someone you truly, truly loved. I doubt they ever truly loved, otherwise they couldn’t do this.”
Constable Carroll was murdered by the Continuity IRA in Craigavon in March.
The police officer was gunned down just 48 hours after two soldiers were shot dead by the Real IRA at an army base in Antrim.
Kate Carroll told UTV she was still in agony over the loss.
“Groundhog day is Monday,” she said.
“Every Monday I re-live what happened.
“As the day goes on I get worse and worse and worse, because I’m watching the clock until the hour came that Steve was killed – at 9.50pm.
“I just re-live that day over and over again.”
But she said she was neither bitter nor angry at the men who murdered her husband.
“I have no bitterness in me. Never had, never will and nobody on this earth is ever going to make me that way. Nobody.
“I pray for them. They’re not with me 24/7.
“If they were walking in my shoes for one day, just one day … that would let them see what they have done.”
‘Inspirational’
She received the award on what would have been Stephen’s 49th birthday, a birthday he predicted he would never see.
An emotional Kate explained: “His dad died when he was 49 and Steve thought that he wouldn’t make it … He wasn’t to know he was going to be shot.”
Kate and Stephen would have celebrated their 24th wedding anniversary in August. Instead, it was a bleak day.
“That morning I just woke up completely empty – there was no Steve,” Kate said.
“It should have been a really, really happy day and it was one of the worst days of my life.”
Too distraught to visit her husband’s grave, Kate has instead planted a tree in her garden in his memory.
But next summer she will go to Ashford Castle, where she and Stephen had planned to renew their wedding vows on their silver anniversary.
She insists it is what her husband would have wanted.
