L’ex fondatore dei Provisional IRA Laurence O’Neill ha bollato McGuinness come “giuda” e secondo lui dovrebbe nascondersi per la vergogna per il suo incontro con la regina mentre l’Irlanda del Nord rimane sotto il giogo britannico.
O’Neill stava parlando durante una commemorazione svoltasi domenica a Crossmaglen in onore dell’artigiano degli ordigni esplosivi dell’IRA, Sean O’Callaghan, morto otto anni fa.
Circa 300 persone hanno partecipato al raduno. Tra gli astanti anche il prominente repubblicano di Lurgan Colin Duffy, l’ex parlamentare e consigliere dello Sinn Fein Davy Hyland, il segretario generale di éirígí e della Garvaghy Road Residents Coalition Breandan MacCionnaith e alcuni ex leader IRA di Tyrone.
Anche gli ex hunger strikers Tommy McKearney e Gerard Hodgins erano presenti.
Un velivolo dell’esercito inglese sorvolava incessantemente sulla folla radunata al memoriale dell’IRA che, secondo lo Sinn Fein, non sarebbe un memoriale politico.
Per il partito di Falls Road la statua eretta nel centro cittadino è “un’attrazione turistica” e sostiene una richiesta per la concessione di 30.000 sterline pubbliche per la sua sistemazione, osteggiata dagli unionisti e dalle vittime del terrorismo.
Per Laurence O’Neill la regina Elisabetta II è “comandante in capo” dell’esercito britannico che ha assassinato repubblicani in Irlanda nel corso di molti decenni.
McGuinness – che denunciò due anni fa i repubblicani contrari al processo di pace come “traditori dell’isola di Irlanda” – è stato bollato a sua volta da O’Neill come traditore per “stringere la mano alla regina d’Inghilterra come garanzia che vedrà realizzarsi il suo sogno di un’Irlanda come una pacifica colonia”.
“Noi siamo qui oggi perché siamo repubblicani della scuola originale, non di quelli che hanno sputato nel piatto e stanno cercando di giustificare il proprio tradimento”, ha affermato.
Secondo O’Neill la base repubblicana è stata “truffata, tradita, venduta e gli è stato detto «non un proiettile, non un’oncia (di esplosivo)»”.
Prosegue il repubblicano: “Vergogna su chi ci ha venduto. Ci hanno raccontato la bugia che la guerra era ad un punto morto – anche se l’IRA aveva 20 tonnellate di armi nei depositi di tutta l’Irlanda”.
Al raduno hanno parlato anche l’ex parlamentare dello Sinn Fein Pat McNamee e dal ex rappresentante del partito Jim McAllister.
“Non raccontateci che ottenere l’attuale assetto politico nel Nord fosse lo scopo della lotta repubblicana” afferma McNamee.
“Non raccontateci che la gente ha sofferto ed è morta per una migliore partizione.
“Sean O’Callaghan ha dato i suoi anni migliori per una repubblica indipendente formata da 32 contee. Non avrebbe partecipato alla festa nei giardini (a Stormont) o a qualsiasi altro incontro con i reali questa settimana”.

McGuinness a Judas, say ex-IRA men
Ex-Provisional IRA founder Laurence O’Neill denounced Mr McGuinness as “a Judas” and said he should hang his head in shame for meeting the Queen while Northern Ireland remained under British rule.
Mr O’Neill was addressing a commemoration yesterday in Crossmaglen for local IRA bomb-maker, Sean O’Callaghan, who died eight years ago.
Around 300 people attended the rally including leading Lurgan republican Colin Duffy, ex-Sinn Fein MLA and Newry councillor Davy Hyland, Garvaghy Road residents’ spokesman Breandan MacCionnaith and former Tyrone IRA leaders.
Ex-IRA hunger-strikers Tommy McKearney and Gerard Hodgins were also present.
A British Army spotter plane hovered overhead throughout the rally which was held at a controversial IRA monument that Sinn Fein denies is a political memorial.
The party claims the statue (pictured) in the centre of the village is “a tourist attraction” and is supporting an application for a grant of up to £30,000 of taxpayers’ money for its refurbishment, something that unionists and victims of terrorism have opposed.
Laurence O’Neill from Co Antrim said the Queen was “commander-in-chief” of a British army that had killed republicans in Ireland for decades.
Mr McGuinness – who two years ago denounced dissident republicans as “traitors to the island of Ireland” – was himself denounced by O’Neill as a traitor for “shaking the paw of the Queen of England as a guarantee that will see her dream come true of Ireland remaining a cosy, peaceful colony”.
“We are here today because we are republicans of the original school, not the kind that have supped the soup and would try to justify their treachery,” he said.
Mr O’Neill claimed republican grassroots had been “conned, betrayed, sold down the river and told ‘not a bullet, not an ounce’”.
He said: “Shame on those who sold us out. We were told the lie that the war was at a stalemate — yet the IRA had 20 tons of weaponry in bunkers all over Ireland.”
The rally was also addressed by former Sinn Fein MLA Pat McNamee and former party representative Jim McAllister.
Mr McNamee said: “Don’t tell us that securing the current political arrangements in the North was what the republican struggle was about.
“Don’t tell us that a better partition is what people suffered and died for.
“Sean O’Callaghan gave the best years of his life for an independent 32-county republic. He wouldn’t be attending the garden party or any other Royal meeting this week.”
