Le famiglie del McGurk’s Bar protestano contro Baggott

Dopo la pubblicazione nel mese di febbraio della relazione del Police Ombudsman riguardante le indagini condotte dalla RUC sul massacro al McGurk’s Bar, il Chief Constable (Comandante della Polizia, Ndt), Matt Baggott, ha respinto gli aspetti chiave delle conclusioni del Mediatore. Ha provato a suggerire che il male causato alle famiglie fosse causato da “confusione” e non si trattasse del diretto risultato di una deliberata campagna di disinformazione che ha coinvolto la RUC, il quartier generale dell’esercito britannico ed il NIO.

Abbiamo incontrato il Chief Constable pochi giorni dopo la sua dichiarazione e gli abbiamo chiesto di studiare il rapporto e di convocare tutte le famiglie per farci sapere esattamente quale dai 13 punti respingeva e perché. Avevamo capito che sarebbe stata questione di settimane. Tre mesi dopo il Chief Constable continua a rifiutare l’incontro o di darci una spiegazione per la sua dichiarazione profondamente offensiva. Ha prestato orecchio allo Special Branch, ma è rimasto sordo per le famiglie delle vittime.

La menzogna, le invenzioni, la disinformazione in relazione al McGurk’s Bar è iniziata con un rapporto del Duty Officer della RUC, la mattina dopo l’esplosione, che sosteneva che un uomo con una valigia era entrato nel bar e l’aveva laciata a terra per essere ritirata da un’altra persona. Questa è la fabbricazione di moenzogne della RUC ed il pretesto per dire che l’esplosione era stata causata da una bomba dell’IRA in transito. Questa è l’oscura propaganda che ha svilito il buon nome delle nostre famiglie.

Oggi abbiamo portato una valigia per il Chief Constable. Questo simboleggia gli anni di menzogne ​​e inganni. La valigia che non c’era mai stata, ma che era stato inventata dagli ufficiali RUC. La bomba dell’IRA, in realtà, era una bomba UVF.

Quella bugia è stata seguita da molte altre e questa valigia contiene le copie dei documenti che diffondono le menzogne, le invenzioni, la disinformazione. I rapporti dello Special Branch, i riassunti dei documenti di intelligence dell’esercito britannico, la dichiarazione di John Taylor a Stormont, il briefing del primo ministro Faulkner al ministro dell’Interno Maudling e molti altri (tutti disponibili nella nostra pagina di ricerca).

E’ stata sollevata una questione di scuse da parte del Chief Constable a nome della polizia. Non abbiamo più voglia di sentire scuse. Il tempo è passato. Dopo così tanto ritardo non servirebbe a nulla.

Ciò che vogliamo sentire dal Chief Constable è se ora accetta la relazione del Police Ombudsman. Senza se, senza ma, senza scuse. E senza ulteriori ritardi – questi ritardi hanno solo esasperato il trauma sentito dalle nostre famiglie.

Non chiediamo più un incontro con il Chief Constable. L’onere adesso spetta a lui come dipendente pubblico.

McGurk’s bar families: the suitcase that never was – Press release

Following the publication in February of the Police Ombudsman‘s report into the RUC investigation of the McGurk’s Massacre, the Chief Constable, Matt Baggott, rejected key aspects of the Ombudsman’s findings. He tried to suggest that the hurt caused to the families was as a result of ‘confusion’ and was not the direct result of a deliberate campaign of disinformation involving the RUC, British Army HQ and the NIO.

We met the Chief Constable within days of his statement and asked him to study the report and meet all of the families to let us know exactly which of the 13 findings he rejected and why. We understood that this would take a matter of weeks. Three months later the Chief Constable is still refusing to meet us or give us any explanation for his deeply hurtful statement. He has had the ear of Special Branch but has remained deaf to the families of the victims.

The lie, the spin, the disinformation in relation to McGurk’s Bar began with a report from the RUC Duty Officer on the morning after the bombing which claimed that a man with a suitcase had entered the bar and set the suitcase down to be picked up by another person. This is the RUC fabrication and pretext that the explosion was an IRA bomb-in-transit. This is the black propaganda that villified the good name of our families.

We have brought a suitcase here today for the Chief Constable. This symbolises the years of lies and deception. The suitcase that never was but which was invented by RUC officers. The IRA bomb that was in fact a UVF bomb.

That lie was followed by many others and this suitcase contains copies of the documents that spread the lies, the spin, the disinformation. Special Branch reports, British Army HQ intelligence summaries, John Taylor’s statement to Stormont, Prime Minister Faulkner’s briefing to Home Secretary Maudling and more (all available on our Research page).

The question has arisen of an apology from the Chief Constable on behalf of the police. We no longer wish to hear an apology. The time has past. After such a delay it would serve no purpose.

What we do want to hear from the Chief Constable is if he now accepts the report of the Police Ombudsman. No ifs or buts or excuses. And no more delays – for these delays have only exasperated the trauma felt by our families.

We are no longer requesting a meeting with the Chief Constable. The onus is now on him as a public servant.
