Le minacce sulla giustizia “potrebbero fermare i colloqui”

Il leader del DUP Peter Robinson ha avvertito lo Sinn Fein che i negoziati sul decentramento dei poteri sulla giustizia potrebbe fermarsi se i repubblicani ricorrono “al ricatto”

Il comunicato di Robinson segue l’articolo di un funzionario dello Sinn Fein pubblicato questa settimana, secondo cui l’attuale stallo sulla giustizia potrebbe causare una “caduta libera”.

Peter Robinson e Martin McGuinness dello Sinn Fein incontreranno Gordon Brown a Londra nella giornata di sabato.

Comunque, le relazioni tra i due partiti nordirlandesi sembrano essere giunte ad un punto basso.

Durante la settimana Declan Kearney, alto funzionario dello Sinn Fein, ha usato un articolo su un quotidiano per avvisare il DUP ed il governo che i repubblicani non vanno dati per scontati e che la politica potrebbe andare in caduta libera.

Sebbene il ministro junior dello Sinn Fein, Gerry Kelly, ha negato qualsiasi minaccia di uscire da Stormont, Peter Robinson non sembra convinto.

Riferisce che il suo partito non sarà oggetto di ricatto e non negozierà in un clima ricattatorio.

“So quanto sia difficile per lo Sinn Fein di venire ai patti con le nuove circostanze in cui non possono più fare i bulli ed intimidire per ottenere le cose a modo loro”; ha affermato.

“I passati governi e l’UUP possono aver capitolato davanti a queste tattiche ma il DUP non cederà alle minacce di ‘scioglimento’ o ‘caduta libera’ se lo Sinn Fein non viene placato.

“La democrazia può essere frustrata a volte, ma continuare a lamentarsi e minacciare di far affondare la barca su cui sono a bordo sembra un’inezia imprudente”.

Justice threat ‘could halt talks’

DUP leader Peter Robinson has warned Sinn Fein that negotiations on devolving justice could come to a halt if republicans resort to “blackmail”.

His statement follows an article from a senior Sinn Fein official this week that the current impasse over justice could go into “free-fall”.

Mr Robinson and Sinn Fein’s Martin McGuinness are expected to meet Gordon Brown in London on Saturday.

However, relations between their parties seem to hitting another low.

Earlier this week a senior Sinn Fein official Declan Kearney used a newspaper article to warn the DUP and the government that republicans should not be taken for granted and politics might go into free fall.

Although the Sinn Fein junior minister Gerry Kelly denied that was a threat to pull out of Stormont Peter Robinson seems unconvinced.

He said his party will neither submit to blackmail nor negotiate in a climate of blackmail.

“I know it is hard for Sinn Fein to come to terms with the new circumstances in which they can no longer bully and browbeat in order to get their way,” he said.

“Past governments and the UUP may have caved-in to those tactics but the DUP will not yield to threats about facing “melt-down” or “free-fall” if Sinn Fein is not mollified.

“Democracy can be frustrating at times but constant whinging and threatening to sink the vessel they are sailing in seems more than a trifle unwise.”
