L’annuncio è giunto dell’Ulster Volunterr Force (UVF), dall’Ulster Defence Association (UDA) e dal Red Hand Commando (RHC).
Lo smantellamento è stato supervisionato dalla Independent International Commission on Decommissioning (IICD) guidata dal generale John de Chastelain che già quattro anni fa osservarono la distruzione dell’arsenale dell’IRA, comprendente armi da fuoco, munizioni ed esplosivi.
La UVF ha riferito di aver distrutto l’intero arsenale, mentre la RHC avrebbe provveduto a smantellarne gran parte.
L’UDA ha rilasciato un comunicato a Befast confermando di aver messo fuori uso parte del suo arsenale illegale e di aver cominciato un processo che porterà alla distruzione di tutte le armi.
La dirigenza della UVF ha riferito oggi: “Abbiamo fatto così per aumentare ulteriormente la creazione di un governo democratico in questa regione del Regno Unito, per rimuovere il pretesto che gli arsenali lealisti siano un ostacolo allo sviluppo delle nostre comunità e per mostrare la nostra eredità di integrità del processo di pace”.
Ha riferito l’UDA: “Questa è una mossa coraggiosa e senza precedenti che è parte di una più larga transizione dal conflitto alla pace.
“Questo processo è stato iniziato nell’autunno 2008 quando il Combined Loyalist Military Command (Comando Militare Lealista Combinato) si riunì nuovamente per affrontare l’eccezionale argomento del materiale militare lealista. Come risultato di quelle discussioni, tutte le parti costituenti accettarono di cominciare a mettere in atto i passi interni necessari per cominciare il processo di disarmo.
“Come risultato abbiamo avuto una serie di incontri con il generale John de Chastelain e la sua squadra che sono stati testimoni dello smantellamento. Questo processo sarà completato entro la tempistica precedentemente comunicata.
“Eseguendo questo atto aiutiamo la costruzione di una nuova e migliore Irlanda del Nord, dove il conflitto è una cosa del passato”.

Loyalists start weapons decommissioning
The decommissioning announcement came from the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF), the Ulster Defence Association (UDA) and the Red Hand Commando (RHC) groups.
The decommissioning acts were overseen by the Independent International Commission on Decommissioning (IICD) led by General John de Chastelain who four years ago witnessed the destruction of the IRA’s arsenal of guns, ammunition and explosives.
The UVF said it had destroyed its entire arsenal, with a further major disarmament act from the RHC.
The UDA released a statement in Belfast confirming it had decommissioned a portion of its illegal arsenal and had started a process that would lead to the destruction of all its arms.
The UVF leadership today said: “We have done so to further augment the establishment of accountable democratic governance in this region of the UK, to remove the pretext that loyalist weaponry is an obstacle to the development of our communities and to compound our legacy of integrity to the peace process.”
The UDA statement said: “This is a courageous and unprecedented move that is part of a wider transition from conflict to peace.
“This process was initiated in autumn 2008 when the Combined Loyalist Military Command was reconvened to address the outstanding issue of Loyalist military material. As a result of those discussions, all constituent parts agreed to set in place the internal arrangements necessary to begin the disarmament process.
“As a result we have held a series of meetings with General John De Chastelain and his team who have witnessed an act of decommissioning. This process will be completed within the previously notified timescale.
“By carrying out this act we are helping to build a new and better Northern Ireland where conflict is a thing of the past.”
