Lealisti minacciano di morte due giornalisti nordirlandesi

Il sindacato dei giornalisti National Union of Journalists ha condannato la minaccia di morte dichiarata dai paramilitari lealisti contro due giornalisti nordirlandesi.

I nomi dei giornalisti non sono stati comunicati.

Bob Miller, membro del consiglio nazionale del sindacato dei giornalisti e capo della filiale di Belfast, afferma: “La cruda minaccia di violenza dai paramilitari, qualunque sia il loro retroterra, contro i membri di questo sindacato deve essere deplorato.

“Chiediamo ai responsabili di queste minacce contro i giornalisti che lavorano in Irlanda del Nord di ritirarle immediatamente e chiediamo ai loro rappresentanti pubblici di rilasciare un comunicato per ottenere il ritiro”.

La Segretaria Generale del NUJ, Michelle Stanistreet, ha dichiarato: “Una stampa libera è il segno distintivo di una società democratica e chiunque faccia delle minacce contro i giornalisti perché svolgono il loro lavoro tenta di minare la democrazia e la libertà di stampa.

“Le minacce contro i giornalisti, da qualunque parte provengano, devono fermarsi”.

Barry McCall, presidente del sindacato dei giornalisti, dice che “minacce come queste non possono essere tollerate. I giornalisti in Irlanda del Nord hanno una storia orgogliosa di rifiuto a farsi intimidire da quelle minacce, ma in primo luogo non dovrebbero subirle”.

UNION CONDEMNS THREATS TO TWO NI JOURNALISTS

THE National Union of Journalists has condemned a death threat issued by loyalist paramilitaries against two Northern Ireland based journalists.

The names of the journalists are not being released at this time, say the NUJ.

Bob Miller, National Executive Council member and chair of the NUJ’s Belfast branch, said: “The naked threat of violence by paramilitaries, whatever their background, against members of this union is to be deplored.

“We ask those responsible for issuing threats against journalists working in Northern Ireland to withdraw them immediately and we call on their public representatives to issue a statement to that effect.”

NUJ General Secretary Michelle Stanistreet said: “A free press is a hallmark of a democratic society and anyone making threats against journalists for carrying out their work attempts to undermine democracy as well as press freedom.

“Threats against journalists from any quarter must stop.”

Barry McCall, NUJ president said: “Threats such as these cannot be tolerated. Journalists in Northern Ireland have a proud record of refusing to be intimidated by such threats but they should not be subject to them in the first place.

The NUJ calls on those responsible for the threats to withdraw them immediately and to issue a public statement to that effect.”
