L’UPRG, che fornisce analisi politiche all’Ulster Defence Association (UDA), ha dichiarato di aver dovuto prendere “forzatamente” la decisione per diverse ragioni. La decisione giunge dopo una larga consultazione con i propri membri, ha fatto sapere l’UPRG, e con le comunità lealiste nella zona di Derry e di North Antrim.
In un comunicato il gruppo regionale di UPRG ha elencato le ragioni per il rifiuto a continuare il loro appoggio all’Assemblea di Stormont e alla PSNI.
La dichiarazione afferma: “Sentiamo che questa decisione sia stata obbligata per una serie di ragioni. La continua demonizzazione del lealismo nella regione da parte di governo, politici ed altri soggetti, l’apatia politica in relazione alla lotta contro le istanze sociali che affliggono le nostre comunità lealiste di base e la ‘green agenda’ motivata politicamente operata dalla PSNI in tutto il nord ovest”.
Il comunicato giunge alla luce delle recenti mosse dei gruppi paramilitari lealisti che hanno smantallato i propri arsenali. E’ stato confermato che sia l’Ulster Volunteer Force che il Red Hand Commando hanno distrutto l’intera quantità di armi mentre l’UDA ha solamente iniziato tale processo.
In giugno si è saputo che l’UDA avrebbe chiesto al governo milioni di sterline ed il rilascio dei prigionieri prima di cominciare il processo di decommissioning.
Il comunicato di UPRG dice anche: “Nel 1998 ci hanno detto che nessuna parte della comunità sarebbe stata lasciata indietro nella costruzione di una nuova Irlanda del Nord. Fatto sta che da allora le comunità di base lealiste nel nord ovest sono state ignorate e abbandonate alla povertà, miseria e squallore. Le interferenze politiche nelle iniziative di finanziamento comunitario hanno visto il lavoro portato avanti dagli attivisti lealisti ignorato e non finanziato”.
In una sezione del comunicato stampa denominato “Dichiarazione riassuntiva del Comitato Regionale UPRG di North Anrtim e Regione di Londonderry”, si dichiara: “La situazione odierna, con l’annuncio che la comunità lealista nella grande area geografica della provincia ha ritirato il proprio supporto alle istituzioni politiche e alla PSNI, serve per ricordare a tutti i politici che l’Irlanda del Nord non è solamente la città di Belfast.
“Le comunità lealiste in North Antrim e Londonderry sono state escluse in maniera ingiusta. Le visioni della faccia pubblica del lealismo a Belfast non rappresenta ciò che pensano i lealisti nel resto della Provincia.
“Le questioni che riguardano i lealisti di North Antrim e Londonderry sono completamente separate da quelle affrontate dai lealisti nella città di Belfast e nelle zone limitrofe”.

Loyalists withdraw support for police and political bodies
The UPRG, which provides political analysis to the Ulster Defence Association (UDA) claim the decision has been “forced” upon them for a number of reasons. The decision comes the UPRG said after a widespread consultation of with its membership and grass roots loyalist communities in the Londonderry and North Antrim region.
In a statement, the UPRG regional group listed the reasons for the refusal to continue to support the Stormont Assembly and the PSNI.
The statement said: “We feel that this decision has been forced upon us for a number of reasons. The ongoing demonisation of loyalism in the region by government, politicians and others, the political apathy in relation to dealing with with the social issues affecting our grass roots loyalist communities and the politically motivated ‘green agenda’ operated by the PSNI throughout the north west.”
The statement comes in light of recent moves by loyalist paramilitary groups to decommission their arsenals. It has been confirmed that both the Ulster Volunteer Force and the Red Hand Commando have completely destroyed their weapons cache, whilst the UDA have begun the process.
In June it was contended that the UDA had asked the Government for millions of pounds and the release of prisoners before commencing the decommissioning process.
The statement from the UPRG also said: “In 1998 were were told that no section of the community would be left behind in building a new Northern Ireland. However, since then, grass roots loyalist communities in the north west have been ignored and allowed to wallow in poverty, destitution and squalor. Political interference in community funding initiatives has seen vital work being carried out by loyalist community activists go ignored and unfunded.”
In a section of the press release labelled as a ‘Summary Statement by the Regional Committee UPRG North Antrim and Londonderry Region’, it is stated: “The situation today, with the announcement that the loyalist community in the largest geographical area of the Province have withdrawn their support for political institutions and the PSNI serve to remind all politicians that Northern Ireland is not about the city of Belfast alone.
“Loyalist communities in North Antrim and Londonderry have been unfairly excluded. The views of the public face of loyalism in Belfast-does not represent what loyalists in the rest of the Province are thinking.
“The issues facing loyalists face in North Antrim in Londonderry are completely separate to those faced by loyalists in the urban expanse of Belfast and surrounding areas.”
