Il Sunday Tribune ha pubblicato una fotografia di Gerry Adams, presidente dello Sinn Fein, mentre fa propaganda a Dundalk, nel 1997, insieme al fratello Liam
Liam Adams è ricercato dalla PSNI per presunti abusi sessuali a danni della figlia.
Un portavoce dello Sinn Fein ha detto di non vedere conflitti tra le dichiarazioni del Sunday Tribune e i precedenti commenti di Adams sugli incontri con il fratello.
“Gerry Adams ha chiarito di aver visto il fratello in diverse occasioni negli anni Novanta e ha specificato che quando ha scoperto l’appartenenza del fratello alla sezione di Dundalk del partito ha fatto in modo di farlo espellere alla fine degli anni Novata”, ha aggiunto il portavoce.
Il Sunday Tribune ha mostrato delle fotografie di Gerry Adams insieme a suo fratello Liam e al candidato shinner per la Contea di Louth nelle elezioni irlandesi, Owen Hanratty, pubblicate dal quotidiano Argus il 6 giugno 1997.
Gerry Adams ha detto di aver scoperto le accuse contro il fratello nel 1987 e di aver voluto un confronto tra la figlia di Liam, Aine Tyrrell (allora solo quattordicenne), ed il padre.
Nella intervista rilasciata questo mese a Rté, Adams ha detto che il fratello è uscito dalla sua vita “quando se n’è andato per un po’ e poi è tornato, sebbene lo avessi visto occasionalmente durante quei 15 anni.
“Quando seppi che era membro dello Sinn Fein mi sono mosso per farlo espellere”, aveva detto.
Liam Adams, ricercato dalla PSNI per le accuse di abuso sessuale sulla figlia fin da quando aveva 4 anni, si è costituito alla polizia irlandese nella giornata di lunedì.
Si è recato in una stazione della Garda a Sligo ma la polizia della Repubblica non può trattenerlo perché non ha ricevuto alcun mandato.
Lo Sinn Fein si è detto “sorpreso” per la mancanza di preparazione da parte della PSNI.
Liam Adams ha lasciato la stazione della Garda dopo aver fornito il nome e l’indirizzo, affermando di voler essere interrogato.
Sua figlia, Aine Tyrrell, si è mostrata pubblicamente per accusare il padre di averla molestata, affermando anche di essere stata stuprata.
Liam Adams doveva comparire in tribunale nel novembre 2008 per rispondere di 23 capi d’imputazione riguardanti i presunti abusi, ma non si presentò.

‘Adams canvassed with brother’
A picture of Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams canvassing with his brother Liam for the party in Dundalk in 1997 has been published in a Sunday newspaper.
Liam Adams is wanted by the PSNI over claims he sexually abused his daughter.
A Sinn Fein spokesman said it saw no conflict with the Sunday Tribune’s claims and Mr Adams’ previous comments on meetings with his brother.
“Gerry Adams has made it clear that he did see his brother on occasions in the 1990s and made it clear when he discovered he was a member of the party in the Dundalk area he moved to have him expelled in the late 1990s,” a Sinn Fein spokesman added.
The Sunday Tribune shows pictures of Mr Adams posing with his brother Liam and Sinn Fein’s County Louth candidate in the Irish general election, Owenie Hanratty, which it said were published in the Dundalk Argus newspaper on 6 June 1997.
Gerry Adams has said he found out about the allegations levelled against his brother in 1987 and said he had brought Liam’s daughter Aine Tyrell, then aged 14, to confront her father.
In an interview with RTE this month, Mr Adams said his brother later moved out of his life “when he moved abroad for a while and then came back, although I saw him occasionally during that period of 15 years”.
“When I learned that he was a member of Sinn Fein it was I who moved to get him dumped out of Sinn Fein,” he said.
Liam Adams, who is wanted by the PSNI after claims that he sexually abused his daughter from the age of four, gave himself up to Irish police on Monday.
He walked into a Garda station in Sligo but Irish police could not detain him as they did not have the right warrant.
Sinn Fein sources expressed “surprise” at the PSNI’s lack of preparation.
Liam Adams left the station after giving police his name and address and saying that he was willing to be questioned.
His daughter, Aine Tyrell, has waived her right to anonymity to allege that her father had molested her, claiming that the abuse included rape.
Liam Adams was due to appear in court in November 2008 to face 23 charges relating to the alleged abuse, but failed to show up.
