La polizia adesso ritiene che sia stata utilizzata una pipe bomb nell’attacco di sabato contro l’ufficio di Alliance Party
Subito dopo l’attacco si era pensato che fosse stata versata della benzina attraverso la saracinesca dell’edificio nella zona di Graham Gardens a Lisburn. intorno alle 6, ma che non fosse stata accesa correttamente.
Tuttavia, a seguito di ulteriori indagini, la polizia pensa che i danni siano stati provocati da un “ordigno tipo pipe bomb”.
Il rappresentante di Alliance Party, Trevor Lunn, ha condannato i responsabili per l’attacco al suo ufficio elettorale.
Il parlamentare per Lagan Valley ha affermato: “Questo è un attacco alla democrazia. Non c’è posto nella nostra società per questa violenza che andrebbe condannato da tutti.
“Questo attacco non ci dissuaderà dal continuare a operare per conto del popolo di Lagan Valley. Questo è l’ultimo di una serie di attacchi contro le sedi di Alliance Party, ma non cederemo alla violenza e all’intimidazione. Alliance continuerà a lavorare per realizzare un futuro comune per tutti”.
La polizia ha detto che una persona ha segnalato di aver sentito uno scoppioi nella zona, prima che il danneggiamento fosse stato scoperto nelle susseguenti indagini.
La PSNI chiede a chiunque si sia trovato in Batchelor’s Walk o Railway Street a Lisburn tra le 5:30 e le 6:30 di farsi avanti.
David Ford, numero uno del partito, e Naomi Long, parlamentare di East Belfast, hanno visitato l’ufficio sabato mattina, mostrando vicinanza e sostegno al collega di partito.
La Long ha detto: “L’attentato di oggi contro l’ufficio elettorale di Trevor Lunn a Lisburn è un attacco a tutti gli abitanti di quella città. Cerchiamo di essere uniti nella nostra determinazione a resistere contro i sabotatori, per costruire un futuro migliore per tutti”.
Anche il parlamentare del DUP Jeffrey Donaldson ha condannato l’accaduto.
“Questo attacco non è solo diretto contro un partito, si tratta di un attacco alla democrazia stess.a Chiunque abbia informazioni sui responsabili dovrebbe consegnarle alla polizia”.
Anche Lord Reg Empey, UUP, si è lanciato contro l’attacco all’ufficio Alliance Party, oltre che contro la bomba lasciata da Oglaigh na hEireann nel centro di Belfast venerdì sera.
Ha affermato: “Siamo stati unanimi nel condannare chi si cela dietro questi attentati terroristici. Loro e le loro azioni fanno parte del passato. Questo partito ha dato l’Irlanda del Nord l’opportunità di andare avanti con l’accordo di Belfast nel 1998.
“Quindici anni dopo, è chiaro che vi sono alcuni che non accettano il futuro inclusivo che viene offerto. Coloro che scelgono di autoescludersi devono sopportare le conseguenze”.

‘Pipe bomb’ in Lisburn Alliance attack
Police now believe a pipe bomb was used in an overnight attack on an Alliance Party constituency office.
It had been thought that petrol was poured through the shutters of the building in the Graham Gardens area of the Co Antrim city at around 6am, but did not properly light.
However, following further enquiries, police now think a “pipe-type explosive device” was the cause of the damage. They have appealed for information.
Alliance representative Trevor Lunn condemned those responsible for the attack on his office.
The Lagan Valley MLA said: “This is an attack on democracy. There is no place in our society for this violence that should be condemned by all.
“This attack will not deter us from continuing to work on behalf of the people of Lagan Valley. This is the latest in a number of attacks on Alliance Party offices, but we will not give in to violence and intimidation. Alliance will continue to work to achieve a shared future for everyone.”
Police said a member of the public reported hearing a bang in the area before the damage was discovered during follow-up investigations.
They have asked anyone who may have been in the Batchelor’s Walk or Railway Street areas of the Co Antrim city between 5.30am and 6.30am to come forward.
Party leader David Ford and East Belfast MP Naomi Long have visited the office on Saturday morning in a show of support for their colleague.
Ms Long said: “Today’s attack on Trevor Lunn’s constituency office in Lisburn is an attack on all the people of that city. Let’s be united in our determination to stand against the wreckers and build a better future for everyone.”
Meanwhile the DUP’s Lagan Valley MP Jeffrey Donaldson also condemned what happened.
He said: “This attack is not just directed against one Party, it is an assault on democracy itself. Anyone with information about who was responsible should give it to the police.”
Lord Empey of the UUP also hit out about the attack, as well as the bomb which rocked Belfast city centre on Friday night.
He said:”We were unanimous in condemning those behind these terrorist incidents. They and their actions are of the past. This Party gave Northern Ireland the opportunity to move on with the Belfast Agreement in 1998.
“Fifteen years on, it is clear there are a few who will not accept the inclusive future that is on offer. Those who choose to exclude themselves must bear the consequences.”
