Maghaberry Prison lockdown continues
The lockdown at Maghaberry Prison remains ongoing due to a major search operation.
All visits to the high security facility – both domestic and legal – have been suspended.
A Prison Service spokesman says arrangements for the weekend will be clarified later on Friday.
The search of the entire prison has been commissioned by the Governor Steve Rodford, who has said it is in line with management practice.
“The safety and security of prisons are of paramount importance and this does require searches, both localised and extensive, to be carried out,” he said.
“I have commissioned such searches in my previous career in England and see this as an integral element of managing a high security prison.”
The Prison Service has apologised for any inconvenience caused and stated that all visits lost will be re-scheduled.
