La Ritchie ha lanciato la propria candidatura per la leadership dello SDLP

Il ministro dello Sviluppo Sociale ha espresso la propria visione del futuro del partito nazionalista durante un appuntamento a Belfast.

Qualora fosse eletta alla presidenza, “una delle priorità sarà di ricostruire l’organizzazione dello SDLP”.

Le candidature per la dirigenza si sono aperte il giorno 1 novembre e la votazione si svolgerà durante la riunione annuale del partito a febbraio.

La Ritchie ha spiegato che ci saranno “tre pilastri sotto la mia guida, uniti insieme in una visione coerente del futuro”.

“Un’economia prospera e crescente che innalzi le vite ed il benessere per tutti.

“Una schietta società condivisa per ogni cittadino. E, al tempo, un’Irlanda unita.

“Solo noi possiamo portare avanti questa visione. Così dobbiamo essere sicuri di essere pronti a farlo”.

Margaret Ritchie è l’unica appartenente dello SDLP a sedere nell’Esecutivo nordirlandese. Ha preso possesso del proprio dicastero a maggio 2007 ed è stata eletta parlamentare nella circoscrizione di South Down.

A ottobre la vice presidente dello SDLP annunciò la propria decisione di lottare per la dirigenza del partito.

A contrastarla, il parlamentare di South Belfast Alasdair McDonnell, che disse ai membri del partito: “Se avete alte ambizioni per il partito, seguitemi”.

Nel mese di settembre Mark Durkan, leader del partito da molti anni, annunciò la volontà di farsi da parte dopo le prossime elezioni per Westminster, attese per maggio del prossimo anno.

Durkan ha deciso di voler difendere il proprio seggio di Westminster ma di non voler tenere un doppio mandato, anche all’Assemblea di Stormont.

Il quarantanovenne sostituì John Hume come presidente del Social Democratic and Labour Party nel 2001.

Ritchie sets out leadership bid

The SDLP’s Margaret Ritchie has formally launched her leadership bid for the party.

The social development minister set out her vision for the future of the SDLP at an event in Belfast.

She told party members as leader, “a top priority will be to rebuild the SDLP organisation”.

Nominations for the leadership opened on 1 November and the vote will be held in February at the party’s annual conference.

Ms Ritchie said there would be “three pillars of my leadership, bound together in one coherent vision for the future”.

“A prosperous, increasingly independent economy that lifts the lives and wellbeing of all.

“A genuinely shared society for every citizen. And in time, a united Ireland.

“We alone can deliver this vision. So we must make sure we are fit for purpose to deliver.”

Ms Ritchie is the only SDLP member to sit on the Northern Ireland Executive. She took up office in May 2007 and is also an assembly member for South Down.

In October, the SDLP’s deputy leader announced his decision to fight for the party’s leadership.

South Belfast MP Alasdair McDonnell, told party members “if you are ambitious for the party, come with me”.

In September, SDLP leader Mark Durkan said he intended to stand aside as party leader after the next Westminster election, which is expected around May next year.

Mr Durkan said he would defend his Westminster seat but did not believe he should continue to hold a dual mandate at the Stormont Assembly.

The 49-year-old replaced John Hume as leader of the Social Democratic and Labour Party in 2001.
