Il 17 febbraio Marian Price è stata trasferita presso il centro sanitario della prigione di Hydebanki Wood, dopo aver trascorso dieci mesi in isolamento nella prigione maschile di Maghaberry. La mossa sarebbe il risultato di un “consiglio clinico” dato dal South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust. Molti ritengono sia una scomposta reazione provocata dalla crescente consapevolezza assunta dalla popolazione riguardo alla condizione di Marian, culminata con un incontro dei promotori della campagna svoltosi a Derry la sera prima del trasferimento. Mi è stato comunicato dalle persone vicine a Marian che il trasferimento non sarebbe dettato da situazioni cliniche e le condizione igieniche riscontrate a Hydebank dimostrano che nessuno era pronto per il suo arrivo. Il nuovo regime cui adesso viene sottoposta è ancora peggio rispetto a quello di Maghaberry e sembrerebbe istituito per spersonalizzare e criminalizzare ulteriormente Marian Price.
Marian è detenuta in una delle tre celle di osservazione situate alla fine di un corridoio. L’area è schermata alla vista delle altre detenute che si recano presso il centro sanitario per prendere i farmaci. Ci sono delle telecamere nelle tre celle, due delle quali sono spente. Le è stato detto che la telecamera situata nella sua cella è spenta, ma naturalmente lei non ha la possibilità di stabilire se l’affermazione corrisponde al vero oppure no. La zona in cui si trova è restrittiva e limitativa. Non c’è possibilità di prendere aria fresca se non sotto supervisione. Il “Centro Sanitario” è gestito da una combinazione di agenti medici penitenziari e altro personale di agenzia. NON È un’ala ospedaliera. Invitiamo chiunque abbia una posizione di influenza a visitare il carcere e passare oltre la zona di visita.
Marian ha una doccia nella sua cella e, senza entrare nel dettaglio, non ha privacy. Un flusso costante di personale del carcere entra nella sua cella, facendola sentire come in una esposizione, mentre è un periodo in cui non si sente molto bene..
Quando ho chiesto una descrizione di Marian, mi è stato risposto che sembra debilitata fisicamente, ha subito una notevole perdita di peso ed è molto pallida – sembra molto malata. È anche molto agitata e sembra essere sotto pressione estrema. Questo non sorprende veramente, dato che ha subito dieci mesi di quello che gli esperti definiscono chiaramente come tortura.
Per acuire il suo disagio viene costantemente inseguita per essere coinvolta in “attività”, quando è chiaro che sta così male da non poterlo fare. Una tabella oraria scritta di stupide attività le è stata consegnata venerdì 2 marzo, e Marian l’ha considerata insultante e calcolata. Quel calendario è stato concepito per decidere come dovrebbe trascorrere la sua giornata, dall’orario in cui vestirsi a quello in cui leggere un libro (Marian non riesce più a leggere libri perché le riesce difficile concentrarsi). È stato consigliato a Marian di avvalersi della cucina quando le altre detenute sono richiuse nelle celle. Le mani di Marian sono completamente deformate dall’artrite cronica, quindi cucinare è un arduo compito anziché una terapia. In quello che è chiaramente un tentativo di umiliarla, è stato detto a Marian, quasi come se fosse un regalo, che può essere accompagnata ai canili dove si trovano i cani impiegati dagli agenti durante le perquisizioni.
Un aspetto molto preoccupante sono i costanti suggerimenti e allusioni “all’interazione” con le altre detenute. I membri della famiglia ne sono stati testimoni e hanno riportato al governatore della prigione le implicazioni emotive che comportano. Marian deve ripetere continuamente di essere una PRIGIONIERA SEGREGATA e non una CRIMINALE. È chiaro che questo trattamento si aggiunge al deterioramento della salute di Marian.
È evidente agli occhi di tutti che sono stati fatti dei tentativi per normalizzare ciò che è evidentemente una situazione anomala. Nessuno sembra voler tener conto del fatto che Marian è stata (e continua ad essere) tenuta in isolamento da 10 mesi.
Mi è stato riferito che Marian si sente come “in uno zoo”, con tanti “visitatori” indesiderati. È isolata in un contesto di continue interruzioni che rendono tutto inquietante. La gente entra nella sua cella senza preavviso e la mancanza di privacy è degradante. La verità di questa farsa travestita da “pacchetto di assistenza sanitaria” deve essere mostrata per quella che è: un esercizio di pubbliche relazioni inventate per mascherare l’isolamento e la tortura di una donna bisognosa di un urgente intervento medico.

Ongoing torture of Marian Price exposes cynical DOJ Public Relations stunt
On the 17th of February Marian Price was moved to the health care centre at Hydebank women’s prison after spending ten months in isolation in Maghaberry all male prison. It is claimed this move was the result of ‘clinical advice’ given by the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust. Many believe this move was a knee jerk reaction to the increasing public awareness of Marian’s plight, that culminated with a campaign meeting in Derry the night prior to the move. I have been told Marian’s surroundings are far from clinical and the unsanitary conditions she arrived to prove Hydebank was in no way prepared for her arrival. The new regime she has been placed under is worse than she experienced in Maghaberry and would seem to be designed to de-personalise and further criminalise Marian Price.
She is now being held in one of three observation cells at the end of a corridor. The area is screened from the view of other prisoners who call to the centre for medication. There are monitoring cameras in the three cells two of which are locked. She has been told that the one she occupies has had the camera switched off, she has no way of knowing if this is true or not. The area is very restrictive and cramped. There is no unsupervised access to fresh air. The “Health Care Centre” is staffed by a combination of nursing prison officers who carry keys and some agency personnel. It is NOT a hospital wing. We would urge those in a position of influence to visit the prison and look beyond the visiting area.
Marian has a shower in her cell and without going into detail she has no privacy. A constant stream of prison staff enter her cell leaving her feeling like an exhibit at a time when she is feeling extremely unwell.
When I asked for a description of Marian I was told she looks physically drained, she has suffered a dramatic weight loss and is very pale – she looks extremely ill. She is also very agitated and appears to be under extreme pressure. Not surprising really given she has endured ten months of what the experts have clearly defined as torture.
To add to her hardship she is being constantly hounded to become involved in “activities” when she is so clearly unwell that she cannot. A written time-table of inane activities was given to her on Friday the 2nd of March which she considered insulting and calculated. This timetable is designed to dictate how she should spend her day from what time she should get dressed to what time she should read a book (Marian can no longer read books as she is unable to concentrate).It has been suggested to Marian that she can avail of the kitchen facilities to cook when the other prisoners are locked up. Marian’s hands are completely deformed with chronic arthritis, therefore cooking is a strenuous a task not therapy. In what is quite clearly an attempt to humiliate her Marian has been told as a treat she can be brought to the kennels to visit the sniffer dogs used in searches.
A very worrying aspect is the constant hints and suggestions of “interaction” with other prisoners. Family members witnessed this and pointed out to the governor the sensitivities involved. Marian has to constantly repeat that she is a SEGREGATED PRISONER and not a CRIMINAL. It is clear that this treatment is adding to the deterioration in Marian’s health.
It is obvious for all to see that attempts are being made to normalise what is evidently an abnormal situation. No-one appears to be taking account of the fact that Marian has been (and continues to be) held in isolation for 10 months.
I have been told Marian feels like she is “in a zoo” with so many unwanted “visitors”. She is isolated in an environment of constant interruptions which is totally unsettling. People arrive into her cell unannounced and the lack of privacy is degrading. The truth of this charade under the guise of a “health care package” must be exposed for what it is… a contrived public relations exercise to disguise the isolation and torture of a woman in need of urgent medical intervention.
