Marian Price è gravemente malata, a causa dei lunghi mesi in isolamento, ha affermato la sua famiglia.
L’entità della sua malattia è emersa dopo che è stata giudicata troppo malata per essere processata o addirittura per comparire in tribunale in collegamento video.
Un giudice ha sentito che la salute di Marian Price si è gravemente deteriorata durante questo anno di completo isolamento in prigione.
L’affermazione è stata fatta dopo il respingimento delle accuse contro la Price e altri tre repubblicani relative ad una commemorazione di Pasqua avvenuta a Creggan, Derry.
Il giudice ha rigettato il caso dopo che i documenti dell’accusa non erano ancora pronti. Ma il Direttore della Pubblica Accusa, Barra McGrory, ha dichiarato che il caso contro Price e gli altri uomini andrà avanti, nonostante la sentenza.
Marian Price, 58 anni, era stata accusata di incoraggiare il sostegno ad una organizzazione paramilitare dopo che aveva retto un foglio da cui un uomo a volto coperto aveva letto una dichiarazione a nome della Real IRA.
Alla veterana repubblicana fu concessa la cauzione lo scorso maggio, dopo la presentazione dell’accusa, ma la sua licenza è stata poi revocata dal Segretario di Stato.
Marian Price è stata tenuta in isolamento nella prigione di massima sicurezza di Maghaberry fino a febbraio scorso, quando è stata trasferita nella prigione di Hydebank che, si dice, ha un regime più rilassato.
Ma il marito della Price, Gerry McGlinchey, ha dichiarato al Belfast Telegraph che la salute della moglie si à deteriorata rapidamente ad Hydebank:
“Marian sta così male che in una recente visita è stata accompagnata con una sedia a rotelle. Le sono caduti i capelli, ha perso molto peso e l’artrite è peggiorata.
“Soffre di una grave depressione dopo un anno in isolamento, senza alcuna data di rilascio.
“I medici di Hydebank ci hanno detto che non è adatta a restare in prigione – dovrebbe essere o in ospedale o a casa”.
McGlinchey ha sostenuto che le condizioni in cui viene tenuta sua moglie sono “così pessime” che ha chiesto di essere trasferita nuovamente a Maghaberry.
“Ogni giorno è chiusa nella sua cella molto più a lungo che a Maghaberry. Ha molto meno accesso all’aria aperta e all’esercizio fisico”, ha detto Gerry. “La sua cella è vicina a quelle in cui sono alloggiati i giovani detenuti indisciplinati di sesso maschile.
“Non riesce a prendere sonno perché gridano, picchiano sulle pareti e a volte cantano la Sash tutta la notte”.
Quando le ritirò la licenza, Owen Paterson disse che Marian Price rappresentava una minaccia per la sicurezza. Gli avvocati della repubblicana obiettano che il Segretario non aveva alcun diritto di agire in quel modo perché a Marian Price venne concesso una Grazia Reale nel 1980. Il governo britannico afferma di aver perso il documento.
Due mesi dopo la revoca della sua licenza, Marian Price è stata accusata di aver fornito un telefono cellulare al commando che ha colpito a morte due soldati britannici a Massereene Barracks nel marzo 2009. Per tale accusa alla Price fu riconosciuto il rilascio con la condizionale.
Una veglia a lume di candela si terrà presso il Free Derry Corner in occasione del primo anniversario dell’internamento di Marian Price.
Marian Price è il segretario nazionale del 32 County Sovereignty Movement, ritenuto l’ala politica della Real IRA.
Insieme a sua sorella Dolores e a Gerry Kelly – ora importante uomo politico dello Sinn Féin – faceva parte dell’unità dei Provisional IRA, composta da 11 elementi, che mise le bombe a Londra nel 1973.
Circa 200 persone furono lievemente ferite dall’esplosione di due bombe posizionate all’esterno del tribunale dell’Old Bailey e a Whitehall. Un uomo morì per arresto cardiaco.
La sorelle Price intrapresero uno sciopero della fame durato oltre 200 giorni nella prigione di Brixton chiedere un trasferimento nel carcere femminile di Armagh. Furono alimentate in maniera forzata per oltre 400 volte, con gravi problemi alla salute. Marian Price si è opposta alla direzione politica intrapresa dallo Sinn Fein nel 1994.
Plea for republican Price ‘gravely ill’ in prison despite case’s collapse

Former Old Bailey bomber Marian Price is gravely ill after months in solitary confinement, her family has said.
The extent of her illness emerged after she was found to be too unwell to stand trial or even appear in court via video-link.
A court heard that Price’s health had gravely deteriorated during a year’s solitary confinement in jail.
The claim was made as charges against Price and three other republicans relating to an Easter commemoration in Derry were dismissed.
The judge threw out the case after prosecution papers still weren’t ready. But Director of Public Prosecutions, Barra McGrory, insisted the case against Price and the others will proceed despite the ruling.
Price (58) had been charged with encouraging support for a paramilitary organisation after holding a statement from which a masked Real IRA man read.
The veteran republican was granted bail when initially charged with that offence last May but her licence was then revoked by the Secretary of State.
She was held in solitary confinement in the top security Maghaberry jail until February when she was moved to Hydebank prison which is said to have a more relaxed regime.
But Price’s husband, Jerry McGlinchey, told the Belfast Telegraph that his wife’s health had deteriorated rapidly in Hydebank:
“Marian is so ill that she had to be taken to a recent visit in a wheelchair. Her hair is falling out, she has lost a lot of weight, and her arthritis has got worse.
“She is suffering from severe depression after a year in solitary without any release date.
“The doctors in Hydebank have told us she’s not fit to be in jail – she should either be in hospital or at home.”
Mr McGlinchey claimed his wife’s conditions in Hydebank were “so bad” that she has actually requested a transfer back to Maghaberry.
“She is locked in her cell far longer every day than in Maghaberry. She has much less access to fresh air and exercise,” he said. “Her cell is near cells where unruly young male prisoners are housed.
“She often gets no sleep as they shout, bang on the walls, and sometimes sing the Sash all night.”
When revoking Price’s licence, Owen Paterson said she posed a security threat. Her lawyers claim he’d no right to do so as she’d been granted a royal pardon when freed from jail in 1980. The government claims this pardon has been lost.
Two months after her licence was revoked, Price was charged with supplying a mobile phone to those who murdered two young British soldiers at Massereene Army base in 2009. Price was granted bail on that charge.
A candlelit vigil will be held at ‘Free Derry Corner’ on Sunday to mark the first anniversary of Price’s imprisonment.
