Marian Price è tornata dietro le sbarre la notte scorsa dopo che un detective aveva riferito al giudice di ritenere che la repubblicana avrebbe tentato di interrompere la visita della Regina nella Repubblica di questa settimana.
Alla Price era stata concessa la libertà con la condizionale, dopo essere comparsa presso la Londonderry Magistrates Court con l’accusa di incoraggiare il sostegno ad un’organizzazione illegale, ma è stata immediatamente riarrestata dopo che il segretario di Stato Owen Paterson ha revocato la sua licenza di rilascio.
Marian Price respinge qualsiasi accusa.
La prominente repubblicana di Belfast, segretaria nazionale del 32 County Sovereignty Movement, è stata accusata dopo aver retto un foglio di carta da cui un uomo mascherato ha letto una dichiarazione, durante la commemorazione repubblicana al City Cemetery di Derry City a Pasqua.
Un sergente della PSNI ha detto in un’aula di tribunale pesantemente sorvegliata che la polizia si opponeva al rilascio perché la Price avrebbe potuto nascondersi.
Ha aggiunto: “Il 32 County Sovereignty Movement ha apertamente dichiarato di voler compiere atti per perturbare eventi che si verificheranno in un prossimo futuro, come la visita reale, e che può significare futuri eventi di ordine pubblico che avrebbero potuto vedere coinvolta la convenuta.”.
L’ufficiale ha detto che durante la commemorazione, un uomo mascherato, che pretendeva di rappresentare la Real IRA, ha letto una dichiarazione nella quale ha minacciato di assassinare qualsiasi nazionalista o repubblicano visto come un traditore.
“Ha anche fatto riferimento circa la prosecuzione della campagna militare”, ha aggiunto. L’ufficiale ha detto che la Price ha negato di conoscere il contenuto del foglio di carta fino a quando non è stato letto. Ma il poliziotto ha sostenuto che la donna ha ammesso di aver partecipato a questo evento annuale nel 2009 e nel 2010, in cui furono lette dichiarazioni analoghe, per cui lei avrebbe conosciuto il tono del contenuto.
L’avvocato difensore Peter Corrigan ha affermato che la sua cliente ha tenuto il foglio di carta a causa del vento.
Secondo il legale la decisione del Segretario di Stato di revocare la licenza alla Price ha portato “qualcosa di passato nella presunzione di innocenza”.
Paterson ha mandato la Price di nuovo in prigione dopo il parere dei Parole Commissioners sull’incremento del rischio posto in essere dalla donna. Marian Price era stata liberata su licenza da un ergastolo comminato per l’attentato dell’IRA all’Old Bailey a Londra nel 1973.
Il giudice distrettuale Barney McElhome aveva rilasciato la Price dietro cauzione di 5.000 sterline, più due fideiussioni da 10.000 sterline ciascuna, e le ordinò di consegnare il suo passaporto alla PSNI, risiedere nella sua casa di Belfast e di non prendere parte, assistere o partecipare ad alcuna riunione in cui avrebbero potuto partecipare i membri di un’organizzazione prescritta.
Ma poiché la sua licenza è stata revocata, la Price è stata rimandata in custodia cautelare. Comparirà nuovamente in tribunale il 9 giugno in collegamento video.
Un gruppo di circa 50 sostenitori hanno sorretto cartelli in cui chiedeva la sua liberazione, gridando ripetutamente “SS RUC”. Hanno tentato di bloccare la macchina della polizia che ha portato via Marian Price dal palazzo di giustizia di Bishop Street..
Bomber Marian Price may disrupt Queen’s visit, court is told
Old Bailey bomber Marian Price was back behind bars last night after a detective told a court he believed she may attempt to disrupt the Queen’s visit to the Republic this week.
Price (57) was granted bail when she appeared in court in Londonderry on a single charge of encouraging support for an illegal organisation, but was immediately rearrested after Secretary of State Owen Paterson revoked her release from prison on licence.
Price, from Stockman’s Avenue in Belfast, denies the charge.
Price, secretary for the 32 County Sovereignty Movement, was charged after she held a piece of paper from which a masked man read a statement at a republican commemoration in Derry City Cemetery on Easter Sunday.
A PSNI detective sergeant told the heavily-guarded magistrates court police opposed bail on the grounds that she would abscond.
He added: “The 32 County Sovereignty Movement have openly said they will carry out acts to disrupt events occurring in the near future like the Royal visit, and that may mean future public order events which the defendant might involve herself in.”
The officer said that at the commemoration a masked man who claimed to represent the Real IRA read a statement in which he threatened assassination against any nationalist or republican seen as a traitor.
“He also made references about the continuation of a military campaign,” he added. The officer said that Price denied that she knew the contents of the sheet of paper until it was read out. But he argued that she admitted attending this yearly event in 2009 and 2010, where similar statements had been read out, so she would have known the tone of the content.
Defence solicitor Peter Corrigan said his client held the paper because it was windy and she did not want to make a scene when approached in the cemetery.
He said the Secretary of State’s decision to revoke Price’s licence drove “a horse and carriage through the presumption of innocence”.
Mr Paterson sent her back to prison after advice from the Parole Commissioners that the risk of serious harm posed by her had increased significantly. Price had been freed on licence from a life term for the IRA bombing of the Old Bailey in London in 1973.
District Judge Barney McElhome released Price on her own bail of £5,000 plus two sureties of £10,000 each and ordered her to surrender her passport to the PSNI, reside at her home in Belfast and not to take part in attend or participate in any meeting which may be attended by members of a prescribed organisation.
But because her licence was revoked Price was remanded back in custody to appear back in court on June 9 via video-link.
A group of around 50 supporters held placards calling for her release and shouted “SS RUC” while trying to block the police car that took Price away from Bishop Street courthouse.
