Durkan ha detto che dovrebbero esserci delle indagini su Peter Robinson ed il Castlereagh Borough Council e che Iris Robinson dovrebbe dimettersi immediatamente da tutti i suoi ruoli pubblici.
Ha affermato: “In seguito alla trasmissione del programma Spotlight è chiaro che Irisi Robinson dovrebbe dimettersi.
“Inoltre, domande serie devono essere poste a Peter Robinson e starà a lui adesso provare che le questioni sollevate non intaccano la sua capacità di condurre il suo mandato.
“Se Peter Robinson è coraggioso, è imperante l’avvio di adeguate investigazioni. Altrimenti il suo posto di primo ministro si può mettere in discussione.
“Le domande saranno poste dai funzionari del Castlereagh Council e mi aspetto che il Local Government Auditor lo controllerà da vicino.
“Il Consiglio di Castlereagh è sempre stato mostrato dal DUP come modello del loro buongoverno.
“Comunque, bisogna indagare il motivo per cui solo un progetto imprenditoriale abbia soddisfatto i requisiti per la gara d’appalto per il caffè al progetto sul fiume Lagan.
“Il modo in cui questo criterio è stato progettato e specificato deve essere analizzato.
“Questioni aggiuntive continueranno a crescere su come questi soldi siano stati sollecitati e è nostra responsabilità come politici di assicurare che gli eventi come quelli appena accaduti non possano portare a distrazioni o ritardi nel condurre buone politiche pubbliche”.
MP says Robinson’s position is questionable
Mr Durkan said there should be investigations into Peter Robinson and Castlereagh Borough Council and that Iris Robinson should stand down from her public roles immediately.
He said: “Following the broadcast of last night’s BBC Northern Ireland Spotlight programme it is clear that Iris Robinson should stand down from her public roles for with.
“However, serious questions must now be asked of Peter Robinson and it will be up to him to now prove that the issues raised do not affect his ability or suitability to carry out his public office.
“If Peter Robinson is to be brave it is imperative that he calls for proper investigations to take place. Otherwise it would appear his position as First Minister is questionable.
“Questions will also be posed now by officials at Castlereagh Council and I would expect the Local Government Auditor will be taking a very close interest.
“Castlereagh Council has always been a showcase for the DUP as their model of best practice.
“However, it must be investigated to discover why only one business met the criteria designed for the tender for the café at the project on the River Lagan.
“The way in which this criterion was designed and specified must also be scrutinised.
“Additional questions will continue to arise as to how this money was solicited and indeed if it actually was a gift with no expectation of a return?
“However, there are serious political issues that the public need addressed and it is all our responsibility as politicians to ensure that the events of the past few days do not cause any further distraction or delay getting on with good public business.”
