Il parlamentare SDLP Mark Dorkan ha sostenuto una mozione a Westminster che chiede un’indagine indipendente internazionale sul massacro di Ballymurphy del 1971, in cui 11 persone furono assassinate dai paracadutisti inglesi a West Belfast, cinque mesi prima del Bloody Sunday
Mark Durkan, che aveva già sviluppato un dibattito nella Westminster Hall sul massacro e aveva lavorato coi parenti delle vittime per consegnare una petizione a Downing Street chiedendo un’indagine indipendente sugli omicidi, si è detto “profondamente preoccupato” dalla decisione del governo britannico di non istituire un comitato revisore per controllare le prove collefate agli omicidi.
Durkan si è detto anche “sgomento” per la continua negazione della giustizia alle famiglie delle vittime.
Ha aggiunto Durkan: “Proprio come nella campagna per il Bloody SInday, la terribile perdita di vite umane, l’innocenza degli uccisi e la negazione della verità rendono la campagna per Ballymurphy di principale importanza.
“Questa campagna merita di attirare il sostegno e l’attenzione di tutti.
“Tutte le persone colpite a Ballymurphy caddero sotto il fuoco dei soldati del Reggimento Paracadutisti, che solo cinque mesi dopo assassinarono persone innocenti a Derry nel Bloody Sunday.
“Le famiglie delle vittime meritano che la compassione e l’innocenza dei loro cari siano vendicate”, prosegue Durkan.
“Hanno bisogno di un’autorità indipendente per farlo e lo SDLP spingerà il governo ad ascoltare e prestare attenzione alle loro richieste.
“Chiederemo quindi il governo di rilasciare una dichiarazione di innocenza, di inviare scuse alle famiglie, e provvedere ad un’indagine internazionale indipendente che esamini le circostanze di queste morti”, conclude Mark Durkan.

SDLP Foyle MP Mark Durkan has supported a parliamentary motion at Westminster calling for an independent international investigation into the 1971 Ballymurphy Massacre, when 11 people were shot dead by British paratroopers in West Belfast only five months before Bloody Sunday.
Mr Durkan, who has previously secured a Westminster Hall debate into the atrocity, and joined relatives handing in a petition to Downing Street calling for an independent inquiry into the killings, said he was “deeply concerned” by the British Government’s decision not to establish a review panel to assess the evidence relating to the killings.
Mr Durkan said was also “dismayed” the families of the victims continued to be denied justice.
He added: “Just like the Bloody Sunday campaign, the terrible loss of life, the innocence of those killed and the denial of truth makes the Ballymurphy campaign a very important one.
“This campaign deserves to attract the support and attention of everyone.
“All of those shot in Ballymurphy were killed by members of the Parachute Regiment who just five months later murdered innocent people in Derry on Bloody Sunday.
“The victims’ families deserve redress and compassion and the innocence of their loved ones vindicated.
“Indeed, they require an inquiry panel to do that and the SDLP will be pushing the government to listen and pay heed to their pleas.
“We will therefore be calling on the government to issue a statement of innocence, to issue an apology to the families, and to deliver an independent international investigation (modelled on the Hillsborough Independent Panel) examining the circumstances surrounding these deaths.”
