Parlando dalla prigione di Maghaberry, l’uomo di Lurgan ritiene di essere in carcere per il proprio credo politico.
Secondo il repubblicano, uno sciopero della fame all’interno del carcere di massima sicurezza potrebbe avvenire “tra poco”.
Corey ha scontato 19 anni di prigione per l’omicidio di due agenti della RUC avvenuto nel 1973. E’ stato rilasciato su licenza nel 1992.
Tuttavia il Segretario di Stato ha revocato la sua licenza nell’aprile 2010, dopo essere stato definito “un rischio per la sicurezza”.
Da allora è segregato nella prigione di Maghaberry.
“Sono in carcere da quasi un anno e mezzo, e ancora non so il perché”, afferma Corey.
“Hanno sollevato numerose denunce contro di me, e non sono in grado di difendermi da solo.
“Dicono che mi hanno visto mentre parlavo con importanti repubblicani, e che ho visitato alcune abitazioni a Lurgan Tarry.
“E che significa? Non vuol dire abbia fatto qualcosa di sbagliato.
“Non hanno assolutamente nulla contro di me, ed ecco perché non sono ancora stato accusato.
“Se andassi in aula, verrei rilasciato perché non esiste uno straccio di prova a mio carico”.
Ha proseguito il repubblicano: “Quando sono stato arrestato lo scorso aprile, mi hanno portato alla stazione di polizia di Lurgan. Nessuno degli agenti presenti sapeva il motivo del mio fermo.
“Sono stato quindi portato a Maghaberry. Quando sono arrivato, anche le guardie carcerarie sono rimaste sorprese.
“Uno di loro mi ha chiesto cosa stessi facendo lì, ed io ho risposto: ‘Tu ne sai quanto me’.
“Sono stato sbattuto in una cella e qui sono da allora.
“Il fatto che io sono qui e non è stato comunicato un motivo, rende il tutto ancora peggiore.
“Se hanno qualcosa su di me, dovrebbero accusarmi e mandarmi a giudizio. In caso contrario, avrei dovuto essere rilasciato”.
Corey, 61 anni, ha lavorato per 12 anni a Lurgan come becchino, prima di essere arrestato.
“Da quando sono stato rilasciato da Long Kesh, non sono stato coinvolto in alcunché. Ho partecipato a qualche picchetto e a cose simili. Ma sarebbe stato il massimo in cui mi sarei fatto coinvolgere.
“Ho tenuto un lavoro stabile per più di un decennio, e ho ricevuto una menzione da monsignor Hamill. Accusarmi di essere una minaccia è semplicemente ridicolo”.
Corey ha detto che la dirty protest in corso nella prigione potrebbe presto degenerare.
Ha detto: “Iniziare uno sciopero della fame potrebbe essere una possibilità molto reale. L’accordo di agosto dell’anno scorso non è stato attuato, e questa protesta è probabile che aumenti.
“L’ultimo sciopero della fame iniziò con una dirty protest, e questa controversia potrebbe finire allo stesso modo”.
Ha aggiunto: “Ci sono un sacco di volontari per iniziare uno sciopero della fame. Questa è una cosa di cui non c’è”.

They have nothing on me, says Corey
Speaking exclusively to the ‘MAIL’ from Maghaberry prison, the Lurgan man said he believes he has been imprisoned because of his political beliefs.
He also warned that a hunger strike among republicans in the County Antrim jail could happen “very soon”.
Mr Corey served 19 years in prison for the killing of two RUC men in 1973. He was released on licence in 1992.
However, the Secretary of State revoked his licence in April 2010 after he was deemed to be a “security risk”.
He has been held in Maghaberry prison since then.
“I have been in prison for nearly a year and a half, and I still haven’t been given a reason,” said Mr Corey.
“They have put forward a number of allegations against me, and I’m not able to defend myself against any of them.
“They say I have been seen speaking to known republicans, and that I visited a number of houses in Lurgan Tarry.
“What does that matter? It doesn’t mean I’ve done anything wrong.
“They have absolutely nothing on me, and that’s why they haven’t charged me.
“If I went to court, I would end up being released because there is not a shred of evidence against me.”
He continued: “When I was arrested last April, I was taken to Lurgan police station. None of the police officers in the station knew why I had been arrested.
“I was then taken to Maghaberry. When I got here, even the prison officers were surprised to see me.
“One of them asked me what I was doing here, and I replied, ‘You know as much as I do’.
“I was thrown into a cell and I have been here ever since.
“The fact that I’m in here and haven’t been given a reason makes the whole thing even worse.
“If they have anything on me, they should charge me and send me to trial. If not, I should be released.”
The 61-year-old worked as a grave digger in the town for twelve years before he was arrested.
“When I was released from Long Kesh, I did not get involved in anything. I would have attended the odd white-line picket, things like that. But that’s the most I would have been involved with.
“I have held down a steady job for more than a decade, and even got a character reference from Monsignor Hamill. To accuse me of posing a threat is just ridiculous.”
Mr Corey said the ongoing dirty protest at the prison could soon escalate.
He said: “A hunger strike is looking like a very real possibility. The agreement of August last year is not being implemented, and this protest is likely to escalate.
“The last hunger strike started with a dirty protest, and this dispute could end the same way.”
He added: “There are plenty of volunteers for a hunger strike. That’s one thing there’s no shortage of.”
