“Martin McGuinness deve affrontare tutto il suo passato”

A seguito di un’intervista rilasciata al Derry Journal da Martin McGuinness, il parlamentare del DUP per East Londonderry, Gregory Campbell, ha dichiarato: “Martin McGuinness è l’attuale vice primo ministro e recentemente è stato oggetto di possibili attacchi e minacce da parte di elementi dissidenti a Londonderry. Nella sua risposta ha spiegato che non ha intenzione di farsi scoraggiare.

“La prima cosa da dire è che tutte le minacce e gli attacchi reali, a prescindere da chi sia la vittima o chi è il colpevole, devono essere condannati da tutti i democratici. Indifferentemente se le minacce siano attuali o vecchie di 30 anni.

“La parte più rivelatrice della risposta di Martin McGuinness è dove riferisce di voler parlare con coloro che sono coinvolti nella violenza dissidente.

“Quando dice «Posso difendere con chiunque le decisioni nel corso degli ultimi 20 anni ed il mio coinvolgimento nel processo di pace cme capo negoziatore dello Sinn Féin» sfortunatamente non riesce ad avere a che fare con uno degli elementi essenziali dell’affrontare il passato.

Mentre parla degli ultimi 20 anni, non riesce per niente a fare riferimento ai 20 anni precedenti, che è il periodo che ha portato tanto dolore e terrore per molti in Irlanda del Nord. Lo Sinn Féin ha parlato tante volte di «affrontare il passato», devono elaborare la parte dove illustrano come i loro membri hanno avuto un ruolo importante, se vogliono che la gente inizi a credergli”.

McGuinness Needs to Deal With All His Past

Following an interview in the Derry Journal with Martin McGuinness the DUP’s East Londonderry MP Gregory Campbell said,

“Martin McGuinness MLA is the current deputy first minister and has been the subject of potential attacks and threats recently from dissident elements in Londonderry. In his response to them he has indicated that he intends not to be deterred.

The first thing that must be said is that all threats and actual attacks, irrespective of who is the victim or who is the perpetrator should be condemned by all democrats. This is the case whether they occur today or 30 years ago.

The most revealing part of Martin McGuinness’s response is where he refers to wanting to talk to those involved in dissident violence.

When he says “I can defend to anybody the decisions I made over the last 20 years and my involvement in the peace process as Sinn Fein Chief negotiator” he unfortunately fails to deal with one of the most essential elements of dealing with the past.

While talking about the last 20 years he completely fails to refer to the previous 20 years, which is the period that brought about so much heartache and terror to so many people in Northern Ireland. Sinn Fein have repeatedly talked about ‘dealing with the past’, they have to elaborate on the part so many of their members played in causing it, if they want people to begin believing them.”
