Durante l’intervista radiofonica condotta da Ray D’Arcy – su Today FM – ha negato di essere stato il numero uno dell’IRA.
“Questa è un’accusa sollevata contro di me. Ma è assolutamente non veritiera”.
Quando gli è stato chiesto chi fosse alla guida dell’organizzazione paramilitare repubblicana nel 1979, McGuinness ha replicato: “Non lo so, non ero membro dell’IRA all’epoca”.
McGuinness ha confermato di essere entrato nell’IRA negli anni Settanta perché lui ed i membri della sua comunità venivano trattati come cittadini di seconda classe.
Il candidato alle presidenziali irlandesi ha anche negato di aver permesso a Frank Hegarty di tornare nella sua casa di Derry nel 1986, dove fu poi assassinato da un commando dell’IRA.
“E’ una rappresentazione completamente errata di quanto accadde all’epoca. Ma non dirò nulla che potrebbe provocare nuovo dolore alla famiglia Hegarty”.

McGuinness: I was never IRA chief of staff
In an interview on the Ray D’Arcy show on Today FM, he said he was never the leader of the IRA.
“That is an accusation that has been levelled at me. It is absolutely untrue.”
When asked who was the chief of staff in 1979, Mr McGuinness replied, “I don’t know, I wasn’t in the IRA at the time.”
Mr McGuinness said he had joined the IRA in the 1970s because he and members of his community were treated as second-class citizens.
Mr McGuinness also denied claims that he had enticed Frank Hegarty to return to his home in Derry in 1986, where he was then murdered by the IRA.
“It’s a total misrepresentation of what happened at that time. But I’m not going to say anything that will hurt the Hegarty family any more.”
