Il candidato alle presidenziali Martin McGuinness ha negato di aver ucciso qualcuno durante il tempo trascorso nell’IRA
Si è detto anche non responsabile, neppure indirettamente, per gli omicidi perpetrati dai Provisional IRA.
Quando gli è stato chiesto se aveva mai sparato a qualcuno, ha replicato: “Beh, non intendo scendere nei dettagli”.
“Ero nell’IRA nel periodo in cui Derry era occupata dall’esercito britannico, quando c’era grande ingiustizia e la gente veniva trattata da cittadini di seconda classe”, ha aggiunto.
“Molti giovani della mia generazione erano coinvolti in attacchi contro l’esercito britannico e la RUC, usando bottiglie molotov, pietre e qualsiasi altro oggetto capitava nelle loro mani ed io non ero diverso da tutti loro”, prosegue McGuinness.
Neil Prendeville, il presentatore di Cork 96FM, ha allora chiesto al candidato presidente dello Sinn Fein: “Quindi non ha utilizzato le pistole, le ha lasciate agli altri?”
“No, non ho detto proprio così, non intendo spogliarmi delle mie responsabilità durante il tempo trascorso nell’IRA”, ha risposto McGuinness.
Il membro dello Sinn Féin ha affrontato ripetute domande sul suo passato nell’IRA da quando ha annunciato la sua candidatura.
Alla nuova domanda sulla durata della sua appartenenza all’organizzazione repubblicana, ha risposto:
“Ho detto al tribunale Saville che mi sono iscritto all’IRA intorno al 1970, e l’ho lasciata alla fine del 1974.”
Gli è stato poi chiesto: “Mi sembra un periodo breve per andarsene, non è vero?”
“Beh, come ho spiegato prima, stavo battendomi per le elezioni sin dal 1982 e cercavo di costruire lo Sinn Féin come partito politico nel Nord”, ha risposto.
L’elezione presidenziale irlandese si terrà il 27 ottobre.

‘I didn’t kill anybody’ – McGuinness
Irish presidential candidate Martin McGuinness has denied ever killing anyone during his time in the IRA.
He also said he was not indirectly responsible for killings carried out by the terrorist group.
“I didn’t kill anybody, I didn’t shoot anybody”, Mr McGuinness said.
When asked if he had shot a gun at anybody, he replied: “Well I’m not going to get into the detail of all of that”.
“I was in the IRA at a time when Derry was being occupied by the British Army, when there was great injustice, and people were being treated like second class citizens,” he said.
“Many young people of my generation were involved in attacking the British Army and the RUC with petrol bombs, with stones, with anything that they could get their hands on and I was no different from any of the rest of them”, he added.
Cork 96FM presenter Neil Prendeville then put it to Mr McGuinness: “So you didn’t use guns, you left that to others?”
“No I didn’t say that at all, I don’t divest myself of my responsibility during the time I was in the IRA,” Mr McGuinness replied.
The Sinn Féin member has faced repeated questions over his IRA past since announcing his candidacy.
When questioned again about the specific length of time he was a member of the organisation, he said:
“I told the Saville tribunal that I joined the IRA I think it was 1970, and I left the IRA at the end of 1974.”
He was then asked: “That seems very early to leave, doesn’t it? ”
“Well as I explained before I was fighting elections since 1982 and trying to build up Sinn Féin as a political party in the North”, he answered.
The Irish presidential election will be held on 27 October.
