Martin McGuinness: non sono seccato dalla foto con la pistola

Il vice primo ministro nordirlandese Martin McGuinness ha detto di “non essere minimamente preoccupato” per la pubblicazione delle nuove fotografie nelle quali – sono i primo anni Settanta – impugna una pistola.

L’immagine è stata recentemente recuperata da un archivio americano da Willie Frazer, attivista di Families Acting for Innocent Relatives.

Comunque, il membro dello Sinn Fein ha insistito: “Il passato è passato.

“Sono coinvolto nella realizzazione di un futuro migliore per chiunque, anche per Willie Frazer.

“Non sono minimamente preoccupato”.

Questa settimana (la scorsa settimana, dal 12 al 15 agosto, NdT) si celebra il quarantesimo anniversario della Battaglia del Bogside (Battle of the Bogside), dove un giovane McGuinness era tra i dimostranti.

E non avrebbe pensato di condividere un ufficio così importante a Stormont con il principale leader dell’unionismo.

Ma McGuinness ha anche affermato di “non poter comprendere” il motivo per cui i dirigenti dell’Orange Order non vogliano incontrare la dirigenza dello Sinn Fein.

Northern Ireland’s Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness said he is “not a bit concerned” about newly published photographs showing him brandishing a gun in the early 1970s.

The image was retrieved recently from an American archive by Families Acting for Innocent Relatives campaigner William Frazer.

However, the senior Sinn Fein figure insisted: “The past is the past.

“I’m involved in carving out a better future for everyone including Willie Frazer.

“I am not a bit concerned about it.”

This week is the 40th anniversary of the Battle of the Bogside where a teenage McGuinness was a rioter.

It would never have occurred to him then that he would be sharing a joint top office at Stormont with the main leader of unionism.

But Mr McGuinness also said he “could not fathom” why leaders of the Orange Order are not willing to meet with the Sinn Fein leadership.
