L’ex vice primo ministro sarebbe ricoverato per un grave problema di salute
Mentre iniziano i colloqui per formare il nuovo governo dell’Assemblea nordirlandese è emerso che Martin McGuinness sarebbe stato ricoverato in ospedale a Derry due settimane fa.
McGuinness, 66 anni, è entrato all’Altnagelvin Hospital di Derry a causa di gravi effetti collaterali causati dalle cure per una rara malattia.
A gennaio l’Irish Times ha riferito che la malattia di cui soffre l’importante membro dello Sinn Féin è l’amiloidosi, caratterizzata dalla deposizione in sede extracellulare di materiale proteico a ridotto peso molecolare ed insolubile.
Martin McGuinness non è apparso in pubblico dopo l’ottima prestazione elettorale dello Sinn Féin e non si è recato alle urne.
Giovedì scorso sua moglie Bernie si è recata da sola a votare. Il loro figlio Fiachra ha riferito su Twitter che il padre ha “votato Sinn Féin 1 e 2”, via posta.
McGuinness aveva lasciato il suo ruolo di vice primo ministro a gennaio per problemi di salute ed era stato rimpiazzato dall’ex ministro della Salute Michelle O’Neill.
Non ha avuto un ruolo visibile nella campagna elettorale per le elezioni indette in seguito al rifiuto di Arlene Foster, primo ministro e leader del DUP, di farsi da parte nel corso dell’indagine sulla controversia denominata cash-for-ash (soldi in cambio di cenere).
Prima del voto Martin McGuinness ha scritto su Twitter: “Questa elezione riguarda l’uguaglianza e il rispetto per tutta la nostra gente e l’integrità delle istituzioni. Vota SF per la politica di speranza e non di terrore”.
Lo Sinn Féin è il grande vincitore delle elezioni per l’Assemblea, conquistando 27 seggi e riducendo la distanza dal DUP da 10 seggi a uno soltanto.
Michelle O’Neill ha conquistato il seggio in Mid Ulster, la circoscrizione in precedenza rappresentata da Martin McGuinness.
“Le 26.207 persone che hanno votato per lo Sinn Féin in Mid Ulster stanno inviando 26.207 auguri a Martin McGuinness che ha fatto così tanto per questa circoscrizione” ha detto Michelle O’Neill poco dopo la sua elezione.
Lo Sinn Féin ha surclassato il nazionalista SDLP nella circoscrizione Foyle, che era tradizionalmente il feudo del partito di Colum Eastwood.
Fiachra McGuinness ha riferito su Twitter della gioia del padre per i risultati: “Conosco un uomo che è assolutamente felice”, ha scritto.

Il Segretario di Stato per l’Irlanda del Nord, James Brokenshire, oggi ha incontrato i leader dei cinque partiti principali dopo le elezioni di giovedì, in cui lo Sinn Féin ha quasi raggiunto il DUP.
Secondo il Northern Ireland Act la prima assemblea plenaria dovrà tenersi entro 8 giorni lavorativi o, al massimo, lunedì 13 marzo.
Il primo ministro inglese Theresa May e il Taoiseach Enda Kenny stanno controllando gli sviluppi e probabilmente discuteranno di Irlanda del Nord quando, giovedì, si vedranno al Consiglio Europeo di Bruxelles.
Prima dell’inizio dei colloqui, James Brokenshire ha detto: “C’è una limitata finestra nella quale l’assemblea e l’esecutivo possono essere ripristinati”.

Martin McGuinness reportedly treated in hospital
Former deputy first minister has been receiving treatment for rare health condition
As Northern Ireland Assembly talks begin on Monday it has emerged that the former deputy first minister Martin McGuinness was admitted to hospital in Derry two weeks ago.
Mr McGuinness (66) was admitted to Altnagelvin Hospital two weeks ago because of severe side-effects caused by treatment for a rare health condition, The Irish News reported on Monday.
In January, The Irish Times reported the disease the senior Sinn Féin figure is suffering from is amyloidosis, which is caused by deposits of abnormal protein in tissues and organs.
The 66-year-old made no appearances during Sinn Féin’s successful assembly election last week and did not attend his local polling station to vote.
His wife, Bernie, voted alone in Derry on Thursday in the Northern Assembly election. Their son Fiachra tweeted that his father had “voted Sinn Féin 1 and 2”, possibly via a postal vote or by proxy.
Mr McGuinness stepped down from his role as deputy first minister in January on health grounds and was replaced by former health minister Michelle O’Neill.
He did not play a visible role in the election campaign precipitated by his resignation following DUP leader Arlene Foster’s refusal to step aside as first minister while an inquiry was carried out into the cash-for-ash controversy.
Ahead of the vote, Mr McGuinness tweeted: “This election is about equality and respect for all our people and integrity in the institutions.Vote SF for the politics of hope not fear.”
Sinn Féin emerged as the big winner of the Assembly election, taking 27 seats in the reduced legislature and narrowing the gap between it and the DUP from 10 seats to one.
Ms O’Neill topped the poll in Mid Ulster, a constituency Mr McGuinness previously represented.
“The 26,207 people who voted for Sinn Féin in Mid Ulster are sending 26,207 good wishes to Martin McGuinness who has done so much for this constituency,” Ms O’Neill said shortly after her election.
Sinn Féin outpolled the SDLP in Foyle, which is traditionally regarded as its heartland.
Fiachra McGuinness referenced his father’s pleasure with the results on Twitter. “I know a man that’s absolutely buzzing,” he wrote.
British government Secretary of State James Brokenshire was meeting with the five main party leaders on Monday after Thursday’s election, which saw a resurgent Sinn Fein come within just one seat of matching the DUP’s 28.
According to the Northern Ireland Act the first plenary has to be within eight working days of the election, or on Monday, March 13th.
British prime minister Theresa May and Taoiseach Enda Kenny are monitoring developments and are expected to discuss Northern Ireland when they met at the European Council summit in Brussels on Thursday.
Ahead of the talks Mr Brokenshire said: “There is a limited window in which the assembly and executive can be restored.”
