Martin McGuinness si “vergogna” per la bomba di Enniskillen

Il candidato presidente dello Sinn Fein ha negato di essere stato membro dell’IRA all’epoca della bomba di Enniskillen nel 1987, ma di “vergognarsi” per l’accaduto

Undici persone furono uccise nell’esplosione avvenuta mentre partecipavano alla “Domenica del Ricordo” presso il cenotafio cittadino.

“E’ stato assolutamente terribile ed atroce”, ha detto McGuinness a RTÉ. “No, non ero un membro dell’IRA all’epoca”.

Il politico dello Sinn Fein in precedenza aveva ammesso di essere il comandante della brigata di Derry, ma insiste di aver abbandonato l’organizzazione paramilitare repubblicana nel 1974.

Tutti i sette candidati alle presidenziali stavano prendendo parte a un dibattito televisivo, durante il quale McGuinness ha anche affermato: “Conosco giornalisti che, se ne avessero la possibilità, mi accuserabbero per la Rivolta del 1916 e per la Guerra d’Indipendenza”.

Per il leader dell’UUP Tom Elliott “è perfettamente chiaro alla popolazione nordirlandese che lo Sinn Fein farà e dirà qualsiasi cosa dettato dalle circostanze”.

“Martin McGuinness sta chiedendo agli elettori della Repubblica d’Irlanda di credergli quando dice di vergognarsi per gli attacchi come quello di Enniskillen”, prosegue Elliott.

“Forse è così, ma si vergogna abbastanza per consegnare le persone responsabili? O sta cercando di usare i morti di Enniskillen nel tentativo disgustoso e vergognoso di migliorare le prospettive elettorali nella Repubblica?”

Arlene Foster, parlamentare del DUP per la zona, sfida McGuinness a parlare con l’Historical Enquiries Team riguardo alla bomba senza avvertimento esplosa ad Enniskillen.

“Se davvero McGuinness ritiene che gli omicidi di quel giorno sono una vergogna, allora non dovrebbe aver problemi a parlare con l’HET e rispondere a qualsiasi loro domanda”, afferma la Foster.

“Le voci durate decenni dicono che la bomba di Enniskillen fu un lavoro dei Provos di Derry, dove Martin McGuinness era il numero due nel comando della PIRA.

“Piuttosto che domandare una commissione internazionale sulla verità per analizzare queste cose, sarebbe più di aiuto se McGuinness dicesse la verità su questo attacco all’HET”.

McGuinness continuerà il testa a testa con David Norris, Dana Rosemary Scallon, Gay Mitchell, Michael D Hinngins, Mary David e Sean Gallagher fino alle elezioni presidenziali del 27 ottobre.

McGuinness ‘ashamed’ of IRA bombing

Presidential candidate Martin McGuinness has denied being a senior IRA member at the time of the 1987 Enniskillen bombing – but said he was “ashamed” it happened.

Eleven people were killed in the in the atrocity, while attending a Remembrance Sunday commemoration at the town’s cenotaph.

“It was absolutely terrible and atrocious,” Mr McGuinness told RTÉ. “No, I was not a senior member of the IRA then.”

The Sinn Féin politician has previously admitted being an IRA commander in Londonderry, but insists he left in 1974.

All seven presidential candidates were taking part in the televised debate, during which Mr McGuiness also said: “I also know journalists if they had their opportunity, they would try to blame me for the 1916 rising and the War of Independence.”

UUP leader Tom Elliott said Mr McGuinness’s comments make it “perfectly clear to people in Northern Ireland that Sinn Féin will say or do anything as circumstances dictate”.

“Martin McGuinness is asking the voters of the Republic of Ireland to believe that he felt “ashamed” when incidents like the Enniskillen bomb took place,” said Mr Elliott.

“Maybe so, but is he ashamed enough to hand over the people responsible? Or is he trying to use the Enniskillen dead in a disgusting and shameful bid to further his electoral prospects in the Republic?”

DUP MLA for the area, Arlene Foster, has also challenged Mr McGuinness to talk to the Historical Enquiries Team about the no-warning bomb in Enniskillen.

“If Martin McGuinness really believes the murders that day were shameful, then he should have no problem speaking to the HET and answering any questions they have,” she said.

“The speculation for decades has been that the Enniskillen bomb was the work of provos from Londonderry where Martin McGuinness was the second in command of the PIRA.

“Rather than proposing an international truth commission to deal with these matters, it would be much more helpful to the healing process if McGuinness was to tell the truth about this incident to the HET.”

Mr McGuinness will go head to head with David Norris, Dana Rosemary Scallon, Gay Mitchell, Michael D Higgins, Mary Davis and Sean Gallagher when the Republic goes to the polls on 27 October.
