Martin Óg Meehan di Ardoyne, North Belfast, ha incontrato gli investigatori dell’ufficio del Police Ombudsman per riferire dell’incidente, nel quale afferma di essere stato colpito con pugni in testa.
Meehan ha detto che dopo l’incidente, nonostante abbia chiesto l’intervento di un dottore, gli è stato impedito di vederne uno ed è stato costretto a restare ammanettato in un parcheggio della polizia per quattro ore.
Ha dichiarato che quando il dottore lo ha visitato, la pressione sanguigna ed il battito del cuore erano molto alti e ha immediatamente chiesto di trasferire Meehan in ospedale.
Una portavoce della PSNI ha detto di non poter commentare l’incidente perché viene investigato dal’Ombudsman. Meehan soffre di problemi cardiaci ereditari, che causarono la morte del padre Martin Senior, 62 anni, nel 2007.
Meehan è membro sia di Republican Network for Unity che di Concerned Families Against Drugs (CFAD). Meehan ha riferito che colpi a vuoto sono stati sparati contro la casa di Sammy Cusack, anch’egli membro del CFAD, e che lui ed altre due persone stavano recandosi verso casa sua quando sono stati fermati dalla polizia.
“Ero seduto nel retro della macchina. Il poliziotto mi ha chiesto il nome, in base alla Sezione 44 della Legge sul TerrorismoSection 44, Terrorism Act). Quindi mi ha detto, ‘Esci da questo fottuto veicolo, e se non lo fai, ti tiro fuori io’. Mi stavo togliendo la cintura di sicurezza quando è arrivato e mi ha colpito sul lato della testa. I miei occhiali sono volati via. Il poliziotto mi ha anche spruzzato in faccia il gas CS. Senza dare alcun avvertimento”.
Meehan riferisce che le regole mostrano come un agente deve avvertire prima di sparare gas CS e che non dovrebbe essere utilizzato in un luogo chiuso come un’autovettura.
“Il poliziotto non era minacciato in alcun modo e non poteva aver pensato di esserlo. Ero seduto, e lui era in piedi ad osservarmi”. Meehan ha riferito di essere stato poi arrestato.
Ha detto di aver riferito agli investigatori del Police Ombudsman che, secondo lui, il poliziotto coinvolto nell’incidente dovrebbe essere licenziato.

Ex-IRA chief’s son claims he was assaulted by policeman
Martin Óg Meehan from Ardoyne in north Belfast has met investigators from the police ombudsman’s office about the incident in which he claims he was punched in the head.
Meehan said that after the incident, despite repeatedly asking for a doctor, he was denied access to one and made to stand handcuffed in a police car park for four hours.
He claimed that when the police doctor eventually saw him, he said his blood pressure and heart rate were dangerously high and he instructed Meehan be taken to hospital immediately.
A PSNI spokeswoman said she couldn’t comment on the incident because it was being investigated by the ombudsman. Meehan suffers from a hereditary heart condition which killed his father Martin Snr (62), two years ago.
Meehan is a member of both the Republican Network for Unity and Concerned Families Against Drugs (CFAD). Meehan said blank shots had been fired at the house of fellow CFAD member Sammy Cusack, and Meehan and two others were travelling to the house when they were stopped by police.
“I was sitting in the back of the car. The policeman asked me my name under Section 44 of the Terrorism Act. Then he said, ‘Get out of the f***ing vehicle, and if you don’t get out, I’ll take you out.’ I was taking my seat-belt off when he reached into the car and punched me in the side of the head. My glasses came flying off. The cop then sprayed me in the face with CS gas. He issued no warning.”
Meehan claimed regulations advised that police should issue warnings before spraying CS gas and also that it shouldn’t be used in a confined space like a car.
“The policeman wasn’t under any threat and couldn’t have thought he was. I was sitting down, he was standing looking in at me.” Meehan said he was then arrested.
He said he had told the ombudsman’s investigators that the officer involved in the incident should be sacked.
