Come il Republican Network for Unity ha gestito il problema sollevato dalle parate contenziose come il “Tour del Nord”?
RNU è molto attivo all’interno del Collettivo dei residenti di Ardoyne – il Greater Ardoyne Residents Collective (GARC) – e la loro influenza è molto importante. Sulle sei marce contenziose che attraversano la comunità di Ardoyne, gli attivisti del RNU sono in strada per l’intera durata della parata non ben accetta per monitorare l’intera situazione. Agiscono in questo modo per assicurarsi che la popolazione nazionalista abbia un’effettiva rappresentazione.
La Commissione Parate ha deciso di “impedire a due parate del Tour del Nord dell’Orange Order di passare nella zona di Ardoyne”. Queste decisione contribuirà ad innalzare la tensione nell’intera comunità?
Come sapete, le tensioni nella comunità si sono innalzate in maniera importante dopo che la Commissione Parate ha vietato le due marce. Questo ha portato la comunità unionista/protestante e lealista a bloccare due importanti strade cittadine, impedendo l’accesso a chiunque. E’ avvenuto per due notti di seguito e ha portato a gravi scontri con la RUC/PSNI che ha fatto rispettare la decisione della Commissione Parate. Quattro mmbri della RUC/PSNI sono rimasti feriti negli scontri sebbene non siano stati usati né proiettili di plastica né cannoni ad acqua per far cessare i disordini.
RNU ritiene che la protesta pacifica nella zona di Ardoyne sia stata efficace in passato e la rifarete in futuro?
RNU supporta pienamente il diritto dei residenti a eseguire proteste pacifiche legittime per opporsi a queste parate settarie e non volute, ora e in futuro. Il nostro Network appoggia anche il percorso alternativo proposto dal GARC nel 2009 ma ignorato da quasi tutti i politici, compresi Sinn Fein e SDLP.
Ci sarà un tempo, in futuro, quando vedrete l’annuale stagione delle marce non dividere le comunità del Nord?
L’unico momento in cui io/noi vedremo le parate non costituire un problema per le comunità nazionaliste nel Nord, sarà quando gli Ordini Lealisti seguiranno il senso comune e smetteranno di insistere a marciare dove chiaramente non sono i benvenuti. Le parate repubblicane e nazionaliste si svolgono sempre in zone in cui i residenti non si sentono offesi e RNU chiede a tutti gli Ordini Lealisti di agire di conseguenza.
Qual è il suo punto di vista sulle continue e crescenti brutalità, molestie e arresti di Repubblicani irlandesi? Questo avrà un effetto a catna se le comunità si sentiranno sotto assedio da parte della parate dell’Orange Order.
Per RNU l’incremento della brutalità e delle molestie contro i Repubblicani irlandesi da parte della polizia politica britannica nonn è nulla di nuovo. Tuttavia l’internamento di Marian Price è uno sviluppo preoccupante e deve essere fermamente contrastato da chiunque ritenga che i repubblicani abbiano il diritto di opporsi politicamente al governo britannico in Irlanda.
RNU è realista e sappiamo dalle esperienze passate che le forze dell’imperialismo britannico non si fermeranno davanti a niente, macchiando, calunniando, intimidendo e bloccando la resistenza politica. La nostra lotta è legittima e continuerà fino a quando gli inglesi occuperanno le Sei Contee irlandesi. Se la loro lotta contro il nostro Network continuerà a crescere, i nostri attivisti sono fermamente determinati a proseguire fino ad ottenere la creazione di una Repubblica Irlandese Socialista di 32 Contee.

How has RNU been effective in dealing with issues that arise from contentious Parades like the “Tour of the North” ?
RNU are very active within the GARC residents Collective in Ardoyne and their influence carries considerable weight. On the six Contentious marches that go through the Ardoyne community, RNU Activists are on the ground for the duration of the unwelcome march to monitor the entire situation. They do so to ensure that the Nationalist population have effective representation throughout.
The Parades Commission has stated it has “restricted two feeder parades for the Orange Order’s Tour of the North from passing part of the Ardoyne area.” Will this decision elevate tensions in the wider community?
As you now know community tensions significantly increased after the Parades Commission banned the two feeder marches. This lead to the Unionist/Protestant and Loyalist community blocking two major roads preventing access by everyone. This was done on two successive nights and also led to serious rioting against the RUC/PSNI who enforced the P/C’s determination. Four members of the RUC/PSNI were injured in the clashes although no plastic bullets or water cannon were used to quell the disturbances.
Does RNU believe that peaceful protest in the Ardoyne area has been successful in the past and will you endorse it in the future?
RNU fully support the right of local residents to engage in legitimate peaceful protests to oppose these sectarian and unwelcome marches now or in the future. Our Network also endorse the alternative route proposed by GARC in 2009 but which has been ignored by most Politicians including Sinn Fein and the SDLP.
Is there, in the future, a time when you can see the annual marching season not being a dividing force within communities in the North ?
The only time I/we can see a period when PUL marches won’t be a problem for the Nationalist communities in the North will be when the Loyal Orders listen to common sense and stop insisting upon marching clearly where they are not welcome. Republican and Nationalist parades are always held in areas where residents are not offended and RNU ask that all Loyal Orders do likewise.
What is your view on the continuing and escalating brutality, harassment and arrests of Irish Republicans? Will this have a knock on effect if communities subsequently feel under siege by Orange Order Marches.
RNU view the increase of brutality and harassment against Irish Republicans by the British Political Police as nothing new. However, the Internment of Marian Price is a worrying development and one which needs strongly challenged by those who believe that Republicans have a right to politically oppose British rule in Ireland.
RNU are realists and we know from past experience that the forces of British imperialism will stop at nothing to smear, slander, intimidate and stop political resistance. Our struggle is legitimate and will continue so long as Britain continues to occupy six Irish Counties. If their struggle escalates against our Network, our Activists are quite determined to face them down and continue until a 32 County Socialist Irish Republic can be created.
