Massereene Trial: in aula le telefonate del gruppo di fuoco

Brian Shivers, accusato della morte di due soldati, aveva fatto una raffica di telefonate intorno al momento dell’attacco

Colin Duffy e Brian Shivers sono accusati dell’omicidio dei genieri Mark Quinsey, 23 anni, e Patrick Azimkar, 21 anni, uccisi dalla Real IRA mentre ritiravano delle pizze insieme ai compagni, fuori dalla base dell’esercito di Massereene Barracks a Antrim nel marzo 2009.

Il telefono di Brian Shivers era stato recuperato dalla polizia.

L’avvocato dell’accusa Tessa Kitson ha dichiarato: “Questo significa semplicemente che c’era un elevato utilizzo e attività da parte di quel particolare telefono cellulare che noi riteniamo coinvolga il signor Shivers”.

Colin Duffy, 44 anni da Lurgan, e Brian Shivers, 46 anni da Magherafelt, negano le due accuse di omicidio e di sei tentati omicidi – tre soldati, i due fattorini delle pizze ed una guardia di sicurezza.

Anche i messaggi provenienti da un altro cellulare sospettato di essere stato usato dal gruppo di fuoco della Real IRA sono stati resi noti in aula.

Un messaggio di segreteria telefonica è stato udito in tribunale e sembra collegare la macchina – la Vauxhall Cavalier ritenuta l’auto della fuga – alla sparatoria.

Il telefono cellulare ha registrato due voci che parlano in seguito all’attacco, vicino a dove il veicolo è stato abbandonato e poi recuperato dalla polizia, nel quale è stato recuperato il DNA che secondo l’accusa collega l’imputato al delitto.

Court hears Massereene phone messages

A man accused of the murder of two soldiers made a flurry of phone calls around the time of the killing, a court has heard.

Colin Duffy and Brian Shivers are accused of the murder of Sappers Mark Quinsey, 23, and Patrick Azimkar, 21, who were shot dead by the Real IRA as they collected pizzas with comrades outside Massereene Army base in Antrim in March 2009.

Shivers’ phone was recovered by police.

Prosecuting barrister Tessa Kitson said: “The significance is simply that there was a lot of use and activity of that particular mobile phone which we say involves Mr Shivers during that time.”

Duffy, 44, from Forest Glade in Lurgan, Co Armagh, and Shivers, 46, from Sperrin Mews, in Magherafelt, Co Londonderry, deny two charges of murder and the attempted murder of six others – three soldiers, two pizza delivery drivers and a security guard.

Messages from another mobile phone suspected to have been used by the killers were also disclosed to the court.

A voicemail was played to the court which appeared to link the car to the shooting as the gunmen made their escape.

The phone recorded two voices talking following the killing, close to where the vehicle was abandoned and later recovered by police, yielding DNA evidence which the prosecution say links the accused to the crime.
