Matt Baggott: serve dialogo con le formazioni repubblicane

Il comandante della PSNI ha detto che l’attività repubblicana nel Nord non può essere affrontata solo dalla polizia

Ha detto di non ritenere un tradimento un eventuale dialogo politico con tali gruppi.

Parlando al programma “This Week” di RTE, Baggott ha detto che ci dovrebbero essere delle condizioni legate ad ogni dialogo con i dissidenti.

Ha anche affermato che sono un gruppo di spietati pronti anche a colpire le giovani madri perché indossano l’uniforme PSNI, ma non riuscirano ad avere successo con i loro modi violenti.

Baggott ha parlato dopo che tre bambini sono rimasti feriti in Lurgan, in Co Armagh, quando un dispositivo destinato ad esplodere di polizia in un bidone della spazzatura.

Vi è stata ferma condanna per l’attacco, che viene attribuito ai repubblicani.

Il primo ministro nordirlandese Peter Robinson ha detto che l’attacco esplosivo era stato progettato per colpire, ferire e uccidere chiunque fosse nelle vicinaze, compresi i bambini.

Ha riferito che non vi erano dubbi su quanto malvagi e depravati siano questi criminali.

Attaccare bambini innocenti è stato un atto insensibile e mostra un totale disprezzo per il popolo dell’Irlanda del Nord, ha detto.

Robinson ha detto che tutti gli individui benpensanti sarano assolutamente sconvolti dall’incoscienza di queste azioni.

Coloro che sono coinvolti in questi attacchi devono sapere che non riusciranno a riportare indietro la società, ha affermato.

Per il vice primo ministro Martin McGuinness non c’è alcuna giustificazione per l’attacco di ieri.

“Nessuna causa o credo sarebbe servita da attacchi contro i nostri figli”, ha detto.

“Questi attacchi devono fermarsi e fermarsi adesso, non è questa la strada da seguire”, ha aggiunto.

L’onorevole McGuinness ha invitato chiunque abbia informazioni a contattare le autorità per impedire ad altri di essere feriti o uccisi.

Anche il parroco di Lurgan, monsignor Aidan Hamill, ha condannato l’esplosione.

Ha riferito che l’esplosione è avvenuta a soli 100 metri di distanza da una chiesa provvisoria dove si celebrava un matrimonio.

Ha detto che per miracolo nessuno è stato ucciso o gravemente ferito.

Le forze di sicurezza sono state attaccata durante la notte in Lurgan, mentre stavano indagando su due allarmi bomba.

Gli artificieri dell’esercito britannico hanno affrontato una serie di segnalazioni a Belfast, Newcastle, Derry e Lurgan. La maggior parte si sono rivelate falsi allarmi. Tuttavia, una bomba nascosta in un cassonetto a Lurgan è esplosa.

Tre bambini, tra cui uno di due anni, hanno riportato ferite minori. Il dispositivo era apparentemente destinato ad uccidere o ferire la polizia mentre sgomberava l’area nel corso delle indagini per un oggetto sospetto abbandonato vicino ad una scuola nelle vicinanze.

L’allarme si è concluso alle 3:00 mentre un ulteriore indagine in Lake Street, vicino al quartiere di Kilwilkie, e lungo la linea ferroviaria, che ha portato alla chiusura del traffico ferroviario, è stato dichiarato un falso.

La linea ferroviaria è stata riaperta ed i treni procedono normalmente.

Mentre le forze di sicurezza gestivano questi allarmi, la PSNI è finita sotto attacco di molotov e altri oggetti lanciati da gruppi di ragazzi. La polizia ha lavorato con i rappresentanti delle comunità per riportare la calma.

Intanto la polizia a Newry sta indagando su un attentato con bottiglie incendiarie che ha causato la distruzione di un’autovettura.

La Renault Laguna rossa era parcheggiata fuori da una casa in Drumalane Park intorno 11:00.

La molotov sarebbe stata lanciata da una Renault Megane argento. Il veicolo è stato dato alle fiamme. Nessuno è rimasto ferito. La PSNI fa appello per informazioni.

Dialogue needed with dissidents – PSNI chief

Chief Constable of the PSNI Matt Baggott has said dissident republican activity in the North cannot be dealt with by policing alone.

He said he did not think it a betrayal if politicians engaged in political dialogue with such groups.

Speaking on RTE’s This Week, Mr Baggott said there would have to be conditions attached to any dialogue with dissidents.

He also said they were a ruthless group who were prepared to target young mothers because they wear the PSNI uniform but that they would not succeed in their violent ways.

Mr Baggott was speaking after three children were injured in Lurgan, Co Armagh yesterday when a device intended for police exploded in a wheelie bin.

There has been strong condemnation of the attack, which is being blamed on dissident republicans.

Northern Ireland’s First Minister Peter Robinson said the bomb attack was designed to maim, injure and kill whoever happened to be close by, including children.

He said there could be no doubt as to just how depraved and evil these criminals were.

Attacking young innocent children was callous and shows a complete disregard for the people of Northern Ireland, he said.

Mr Robinson said all right- thinking individuals will be absolutely appalled at the recklessness of these actions.

Those involved in these attacks need to know that they will not succeed in taking society back, he said.

Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness said there was no justification whatsoever for yesterday’s attack.

No cause or belief would be served by attacks on our children, he said.

These attacks must stop and stop now, this is not the way forward for any section of our society, he added.

Mr McGuinness called on anyone with any information whatsoever to contact the authorities and to prevent others from being injured or killed.

A parish priest in Lurgan, Monsignor Aidan Hamill, also condemned the blast.

He said he had been about 100 yards away conducting a wedding at a temporary church being used by the parish when the blast happened.

He said it was a miracle no-one was killed or seriously injured.

Security forces came under attack overnight in Lurgan as they attempted to deal with two bomb alerts.

British army bomb experts dealt with a series of alerts in Belfast, Newcastle, Derry and Lurgan since yesterday. Most have proved to be hoaxes. However, in Lurgan a bomb concealed in a wheelie bin went off.

Three children, including a two-year-old, passing by received minor injuries. The device had apparently been intended to kill or injure police as they cleared the area while investigating a report of a suspicious object at a nearby school.

That alert ended at around 3am a further one not far away at Lake Street close to the Kilwilkie Estate and the railway line, which led to the line being closed, was declared a hoax.

The railway line has now been re-opened and trains are running normally again.

As security forces dealt with these alerts the PSNI say they came under attack from petrol bombs and other missiles thrown by youths. Police have been working with community representatives to try to restore calm.

Meanwhile, police in Newry are investigating a petrol bomb attack that destroyed a car last night.

The red Renault Laguna was parked outside a house at Drumalane Park around 11pm.

The device is believed to have been thrown from a silver Renault Megane car. The vehicle was set on fire. No one was injured. The PSNI have appealed for information.
