La polizia è “pienamente pronta” per il summit del G8 e per ogni potenziale disordine provocato da decine di migliaia di contestatori attesi a disturbare l’evento.
Matt Baggott ha anche confermato di aver ricevuto un’assicurazione scritta che la maggior parte dei costi relativi alla gestione dell’ordine pubblico durante il G8 saranno coperti dal Tesoro britannico.
È stato rivelato anche che 3.600 agenti di polizia provenienti da altre forze operanti a fianco della PSNI durante il G8 saranno soggetti al controllo del Police Ombudsman nordirlandese per eventuali reclami.
Alla riunione mensile del Policing Board avvenuto venerdì a Belfast, Baggott ha aggiornato i membri sulla preparazione della polizia in vista del vertice internazionale.
Baggott ha spiegato di aver affermato durante una conferenza sul G8 avvenuta in settimana che anche i preparativi della polizia per l’evento sono stati oggetto di esame da parte del Policing Board.
“Il G8 si sta rapidamente avvicinando e voglio ringraziare ancora una volta Alistair (Finlay, l’assistente capo della polizia) ed i suoi colleghi per i loro sforzi incessanti avvenuti in un brevissimo lasso di tempo per rendere questo summit molto, molto importante, un successo”, ha affermato Baggott.
“Ancora una volta, rassicuro su una pianificazione meticolosa, un addestramento completo e abbiamo le risorse necessarie per gestire questo evento e qualunque altra eventualità. È un’importante opportunità per mostrare tutto ciò che c’è di buono in Irlanda del Nord e il suo futuro. Noi siamo intenzionati a giocare un ruolo completo e di mostrare quanto c’è di positivo nella gestione dell’ordine pubblico”.
Probabilmente gran parte dell’Irlanda del Nord andrà in contro a disagi.
Decine di migliaia di manifestanti prenderanno parte alle manifestazioni contro il G8 in tutta l’Irlanda del Nord. Gli organizzatori delle marce hanno invitato i facinorosi a stare lontano.
L’ultima volta che il G8 si tenne nel Regno Unito, ci furono più di 200.000 contestatori. Nel corso della manifestazione a Gleaneagles del 2005, ci furono 700 arresti dopo feroci scontri tra alcuni manifestanti e i poliziotti. A dare un aiuto ai 7.000 membri della PSNI ci saranno 3.600 agenti di polizia appositamente addestrati per mantenere l’ordine pubblico. I militari britannici forniranno la sicurezza aerea per i partecipanti.
Un anello di acciaio è stato eretto per tenere i manifestanti anti-capitalisti lontani dal lussuoso Lough Erne Golf Resort e le strade della zona saranno chiuse.
Anne Connolly, presidente del Policing Board, ha accolto con favore l’annuncio che i costi di polizia saranno coperti dal Tesoro britannico.
Lo Sinn Féin aveva temuto che la PSNI avrebbe dovuto coprire il costo della gestione dell’ordine pubblico in occasione del G8, stimato in circa 55 milioni di euro.
Police: we’re ready for G8
Police are “fully prepared” for the G8 summit and any potential disorder caused by tens of thousands of protesters expected to gatecrash the event, according to the PSNI chief constable.
Matt Baggott has also confirmed he has received a written assurance that most of the costs relating to policing the G8 will be picked up by the UK Treasury.
And it has been revealed the 3,600 police officers from other forces who will be working alongside the PSNI during the G8 will be subject to the Police Ombudsman here for any complaints.
At the Policing Board’s monthly meeting in Belfast yesterday, Mr Baggott updated members on police preparations ahead of the summit.
Mr Baggott said he told a conference on the G8 earlier this week that even the police’s preparations for the event were subject to scrutiny by the Policing Board.
“G8 is rapidly approaching and I want to thank again Alistair (Finlay, assistant chief constable) and his colleagues for their relentless efforts in a very short space of time to make this very, very important summit a success,” said Mr Baggott.
“Again, my assurances there has been meticulous planning, comprehensive training and we have the necessary resources to deal with this whatever the eventualities. It’s a huge opportunity to showcase all that’s good about Northern Ireland and its future, we intend to play a very full part in that in showcasing all that’s good about policing.”
Much of Northern Ireland is expected to go into lockdown.
Tens of thousands of protesters will take part in demonstrations against the G8 across Northern Ireland. Organisers of the marches have called on troublemakers to stay away.
When the G8 was last held in the UK, more than 200,000 protesters gathered. Over the course of the event at Gleneagles in 2005, there were 700 arrests after fierce clashes between some protesters and police. An extra 3,600 specially-trained public order police officers are being drafted in to help bolster the 7,000 PSNI members and the military will provide air security for VIPs.
A ring of steel has been erected to keep anti-capitalist protesters away from the luxury Lough Erne golf resort and roads into and out of the area will be closed.
Anne Connolly, chair of the Policing Board, welcomed the announcement policing costs will be picked up by the UK Treasury.
Sinn Fein had feared the PSNI would have to cover the policing bill, estimated to be around £50m.
