Maze mantiene la protezione come sito storico

Il ministro per l’Ambiente Edwin Poots ha detto che non ci saranno cambiamenti allo status di alcuni edifici posizionati nel sito di Maze/Long Kesh

Lo scorso giugno, il predecessore di Poots, Sammy Wilson, chiese ai funzionari di considerare se era possibile revocare lo status (di edificio storico) all’ospedale di Maze e di parte degli H Blocks.

Poots ha detto che le conclusioni dell’Agenzia per l’Ambiente riferiscono come gli edifici elencati meritino tale protezione.

Alcuni unionisti non sono felici per la classificazione data alle strutture di Maze.

Hanno espresso il timore che possano diventare un “santuario” dedicato agli hunger strikers repubblicani morti nel carcere nel 1981.

Per i repubblicani la prigione è un’importante parte della storia irlandese e vorrebbero trasformare il luogo in un centro per la trasformazione del conflitto.

Una società di sviluppo viene istituita per studiare cosa fare con la zona dell’ex prigione, dopo che lo scorso anno l’allora ministro per lo Sport Gregory Campbell decise di non costruire uno stadio multidisciplinare.

Più di 350.000 sterline sono state spese per mantenere il sito dell’ex carcere di Maze negli ultimi quattro anni.

La prigione di massima sicurezza, costruita per detenere i prigionieri paramilitari durante i Troubles, fu chiusa nel 2000.

Maze Prison buildings to keep listed status

Environment Minister Edwin Poots has said there will be no change to the listed buildings status given to some structures at the Maze prison site.

Last June, Mr Poots’ predecessor Sammy Wilson asked officials to consider if he could revoke listed status of the Maze hospital and part of the H-blocks.

Mr Poots said an Environment Agency review concluded the listed buildings on the site merit such protection.

Some unionists are unhappy about the listing of the Maze structures.

They have expressed fears that they have the potential to become a “shrine” to republican hunger strikers who died in the jail in 1981.

Republicans argue the jail is an important part of Irish history and would like the site to become a conflict transformation centre.

A development corporation is to be set up to look at what to do with the former jail site after the then Sports Minister Gregory Campbell decided last year not to build a multi-sports stadium there.

More than £350,000 has been spent maintaining the listed buildings on the site of the former Maze prison over the last four years.

The high-security prison, built to house paramilitary prisoners during the Troubles, was closed in 2000.
