La glorificazione del terrorismo avvenuta nel club della GAA in Contea Tyrone è un’eredità dei tempi andati, afferma il ministro per lo Sport
Fotografie di persone con il passamontagna e che imbracciavano armi finte sono state messe su Internet, sebbene lo Sinn Fein contesti che siano state collegate al club.
Il ministro del DUP, Nelson McCausland, ha chiesto un dibattito sulle abitudini di alcuni dei membri costituenti dell’organizzazione.
“Molte di queste sono senza dubbio prodotti degli anni passati. Comunque non hanno posto nella mia visione di un organismo sportivo nel ventunesimo secolo o in futuro condiviso e migliore”, ha affermato.
McCausland ha riferito all’Assemblea di Stormont di desiderare che il governo si impegni maggiormente sulla questione e di aver scritto al Community Relations Council e allo Sport Northern Ireland al riguardo.
Specificando quali attività permesse potrebbero essere tra le misure proposte.
Il numero due dell’UUP, Danny Kennedy, ha presentato la mozione chiedendo al ministro l’assicurazione che nessun club sportivo dove si sia permessa la glorificazione del terrorismo, possa ricevere sostegno finanziario dal ministero.
“Celebrare la cultura e l’ideologia della violenza che ha causato distruzioni nella nostra società dalla fine degli anni Sessanta e incoraggia, nel 2009, i giovani di abbracciare nuovamente la violenza e portare nuovamente dolore e sofferenza nella nostra società”, ha detto.
“Ci sono punti di domanda in agguato in background in merito alla ricezione di denaro pubblico da parte della GAA e di come si riferisce ad alcune delle regole apertamente politiche del suo statuto”, ha aggiunto.
Il parlamentare dello Sinn Fein per West Tyrone, Barry McElduff, ha detto che non dovrebbero esserci discriminazioni tra uno sport ed un altro.
“La mozione dell’UUP sembra seguire il vecchio schema di mostrare chi è che comanda.
“Lo Sinn Fein non intende tollerare discriminazioni su questa o altre materie”.
Il parlamentare di North Down, Stephen Farry dell’Alliance Party, ha difeso il diritto della libertà di parola ma ha aggiunto una condanna al terrorismo.

Glorification of terrorism at a GAA club in Co Tyrone is a relic of a bygone age, the Sports Minister said.
Photos of people dressed in balaclavas carrying replica weapons were placed on the internet although Sinn Fein disputes whether they were connected to the club.
DUP minister Nelson McCausland called for a debate about the practices of some of the organisation’s constituent members.
“Many of these are no doubt products of a bygone age. They have no place however in my view in a modern 21st century sports body or in a shared and better future,” he said.
Mr McCausland told the Assembly he wanted the government to engage more on the issue and has written to the Community Relations Council and Sport Northern Ireland about it.
Specifying what activities are allowed could be among the measures proposed.
UUP Deputy leader Danny Kennedy put the motion asking the minister to ensure no sports club which facilitates glorification of terrorism receives financial support from his department.
“To celebrate the culture and ideology of violence that wreaked havoc in our society right from the late 1960s encourages the young people of 2009 to again embrace violence and again bring pain and suffering to our society,” he said.
“There are question marks lurking in the background about the GAA’s receipt of public money and how it relates to some of the overtly political rules of its constitution,” he added.
West Tyrone Sinn Fein MLA Barry McElduff said there should not be discrimination by highlighting one sport over the other.
“The UUP motion smacks of the old-style desire to show who is boss.
“Sinn Fein will not tolerate discrimination on this matter or any matter.”
North Down Alliance MLA Stephen Farry defended the right of free speech but added that he condemned terrorism.
