McGuinness: Adams non si candida per le presidenziali

Martin McGuinness, numero due dello Sinn Fein, ha respinto le speculazioni che indicano Gerry Adams come candidato alle elezioni presidenziali del prossimo anno. Anzi, fa sapere il vice primo ministro di Stormont, il partito potrebbe non presentare alcun candidato.

McGuinness ha detto, durante una visita nel sud est nel fine settimana, che molte delle storie sulla candidatura di Gerry Adams sono “solo invenzioni dei media” ed il leader dello Sinn Fein non gli ha mai detto nulla a riguardo.

“Non credo Gerry Adams abbia alcun interesse a ritirarsi dalla politica in prima fila” ha riferito ai giornalisti.

“Ha ancora molto da offrire quale leader dello Sinn Fein e stiamo attraversando un enorme cambiamento politico nel Nord, gran parte del quale non sarebbe avvenuto senza di lui, e penso che noi dello Sinn Fein saremo molto determinati a tenere il nostro leader impegnato nella politica in prima linea così in questo momnto non riesco a vedere Gerry Adams contemplare l’ipotesi di partecipare alle elezioni presidenziali”.

Lo Sinn Fein non ha ancora avuto, secondo McGuinness, alcuna discussione riguardo a tali elezioni.

“Per essere onesti, ritengo che il nostro scopo debba essere la crisi economica che attanaglia la popolazione a nord e a sud e tutti i nostri sforzi dovranno concentrarsi su quel compito”, ha concluso.

McGuinness says Adams not running for president

SINN FÉIN’S Martin McGuinness has rejected speculation that Gerry Adams is to stand in next year’s presidential election and also hinted that the party may not run any candidate.

Mr McGuinness said during a visit to the southeast at the weekend that most of the stories about a Gerry Adams candidacy were “just media inventions” and the Sinn Féin leader had never spoken to him about such a move.

“I don’t believe Gerry Adams has any interest in retiring from front-line politics at this stage,” he told reporters.

“He still has a huge amount to offer as a leader of Sinn Féin and we’ve come through enormous political change in the North, much of which would not have happened without him, and I think we in Sinn Féin would be very determined to keep our party leader involved in front-line politics so at this stage I can’t see Gerry Adams even contemplating running in the presidential elections.”

Sinn Féin hasn’t had any discussion regarding that election, he said.

“To be quite honest at this stage, I think our focus has to be on the economic crisis that people north and south are facing and I think all of our efforts will be bent towards that,” he said.
