Parlando ad una tradizionale commemorazione repubblicana della Rivolta di Pasqua del 1916, la figura di spicco dello Sinn Fein ha detto che l’azione portata avanti dai ribelli è stata inutile, stupida ed egoistica.
Dichiarando che il conto alla rovescia per un’Irlanda unita era già iniziato, il vice primo ministro di Stormont ha detto alla folla – a The Loup, nella contea di Derry – che l’unificazione va conquistata in modo pacifico e democratico, oltre che con l’appoggio degli unionisti.
Ha anche respinto delle dichiarazioni fatte da estremisti che proclamavano di essere il vero esercito repubblicano irlandese.
McGuinness ha detto che l’IRA al tempo dei Troubles non era una gruppo di guerrafondai.
“Erano una forza rivoluzionaria che si è allontanata dall’equazione politica una volta creatasi l’opportunità di portare avanti la lotta per un’Irlanda unita attraverso mezzi pacifici”, ha affermato.
“L’IRA era – per sua stessa natura – della gente e per la gente. Non avrebbe potuto sopravvivere e combattere lo stato britannico così come fece se fosse stata una piccola organizzazione non rappresentativa della gente.
“La gente non dovrebbe essere illusa, le piccole fazioni che al momento stanno portando avanti azioni armate non sono l’IRA e con le loro gesta non stanno portando avanti obiettivi nazionali e democratici”.
Ha aggiunto: “La popolazione irlandese è unita per quanto riguarda la fiducia negli accordi del Venerdì Santo, di St. Andrews e di Hillsborough, e cercare di sovvertire la volontà della popolazione irlandese non è solamente inutile, ma anche stupido ed egoista”.
Dissidents stupid, says McGuinness
Addressing a traditional republican commemoration of the 1916 Easter Rising, the Sinn Fein figurehead said the action of the renegades was futile, stupid and selfish.
Claiming the countdown was on to a united Ireland, Stormont’s Deputy First Minister told crowds at The Loup, Co Derry that it had to be achieved peacefully and democratically and with unionist support.
He also rejected claims from the extremists that they were the true IRA.
Mr McGuinness claimed the IRA that existed during the Troubles was not a warmongerer.
“They were a revolutionary force who when an opportunity to advance the struggle for Irish unity through peaceful means was established it removed itself from the political equation,” he said.
“The IRA by its nature was of the people and for the people.
“It could not have survived and fought the British state the way it did if it was small and unrepresentative.
“People should be under no illusion, the small factions currently engaging in armed actions are not the IRA and they are not advancing national and democratic objectives by their activities.”
He added: “Irish people are united in support of the Good Friday, St Andrews and Hillsborough agreements, attempting to overturn the will of the Irish people is not only futile it is stupid and selfish.”
