Martin McGuinness si è lamentato per l’impossibilità di costruire un’adeguata relazione lavorativa con Peter Robinson

L’ultimo scontro tra il primo ministro ed il suo vice giunge dopo la cancellazione di un incontro già pianificato con Gordon Brown sul trasferimento dei poteri.

Sulla questione si sono avuti intensi incontri nelle ultime settimane.

In uno sfogo a Stormont, McGuinness ha incolpato il DUP per la cancellazione dell’incontro con il minimo preavviso e ha chiesto alla sua controparte nel DUP di “agire insieme”.

Comunque, parlando con i giornalisti dopo un incontro presso il quartier generale della PSNI a East Belfast, Robinson ha parlato di differenze tra le stime del Tesoro britannico e le agenzie locali sui piani finanziari per la devolution.

Sul deterioramento delle relazioni lavorative tra i due leader, McGuinness ha affermato: “Da quando siamo rientrati dagli Stati Uniti, non c’è stato alcuno sforzo da parte dei suoi consiglieri e dei suoi uomini-chiave di lavorare insieme ai miei consiglieri per discutere una qualsiasi di queste materie”.

Ha aggiunto: “Tutto questo avviene sullo sfondo di quello che considero un contributo altamente negativo portato dai membri di alto livello del DUP – tra cui lo scandaloso argomento portato avanti da Peter Robinson, dopo le sue vacanze in Florida, secondo cui dovremmo gettare l’Accordo di St Andrews dalla finestra.

“Una cosa che non avverrà”.

Le tensioni tra i due leader si sono acuite ulteriormente dopo la proposta di Robinson di cambiare il sistema di votazione a Stormont, avvenuta ad inizio settembre.

Per contrasto, la cordiale relazione tra l’ex primo ministro Ian Paisley e Martin McGuinness aveva portato il duo ad essere soprannominato “Chuckle Brothers”.

Robinson è subentrato a Paisley nel ruolo di primo ministro a giugno dello scorso anno.

New political row at Stormont

MARTIN McGuinness has bemoaned being unable to develop a proper working relationship with Peter Robinson.

The latest row between the First Minister and Deputy First Minister comes as a planned meeting with Prime Minister Gordon Brown over the issue of the devolution of policing and justice was cancelled.

Intense discussions have been ongoing in recent weeks on the matter.

In an outburst at Stormont, Mr McGuinness blamed the DUP for the short-notice cancellation and urged his DUP counterpart to get his “act together”.

However, speaking to reporters after a meeting at PSNI headquarters in east Belfast, Mr Robinson claimed there were differences between the estimates of the Treasury and local criminal justice agencies over future budgets.

On the deteriorating working relationship between the two leaders, Mr McGuinness said: “Since we came back from the United States we’ve had no effort whatsoever made by his advisors and his key people who have been working with my advisors to get together to discuss any of these matters.”

He added: “All of this comes against the backdrop of what I consider very negative contributions made by senior members of the DUP – including the scandalous argument put forward by Peter Robinson, in the aftermath of his holiday in Florida, that we should effectively dump the St Andrews Agreement out the window.

“Something that isn’t going to happen.”

Tensions between the two leaders have been further strained after the DUP leader called for a change to the community designation voting system at Stormont earlier this month.

In contrast, the cordial relationship between former First Minister Ian Paisley and Martin McGuinness led to the pair being nicknamed the “Chuckle Brothers”.

Mr Robinson replaced Mr Paisley as First Minister in June last year.
