Una strada di North Belfast cambierà nome in McGurks Way, in memoria delle 15 persone trucidate dalla bomba esplosa in un bar 40 anni fa
La mozione per cambiare il nome di Fishers Court, presentata al Belfast City Council, è stata sostenuta dai consiglieri di Sinn Fein, SDLP, Alliance Party, UUP e PUP.
Solo il DUP ha votato contro il cambio di nome durante la riunione consiliare di martedì. Secondo gli unionisti il cambio del nome potrebbe far crescere le divisioni nella zona.
I genitori di Gerard Keenan erano tra le 15 persone assassinate nel dicembre 1971, quando un ordigno della UVF ha devastato il McGurk’s Bar, ferendo altre 17 persone.
“È un grande tributo ed un promemoria di quanto accaduto 40 anni fa e che non dovrebbe avvenire più”, ha detto Keenan accogliendo favorevolmente la decisione.
“La gente di questa zona sa chi c’era nel bar quella sera. Ci sono ancora membri di quelle famiglie che abitano qui”, ha aggiunto.
Una precedente mozione portata in Consiglio comunale lo scorso anno fu sconfitta, ma martedì sono stati 33 i voti favorevoli e solamente 11 i contrari.
Il nonno di Robert McClenaghan è stato il più anziano a morire per l’esplosione. Il cambio del nome è “un sollievo”.
“FInalmente il Belfast City Council è giunto ad una decisione, una giusta ed adeguata decisione”, ha spiegato McClenaghan. “Sin dall’inizio non doveva essere una questione contenziosa”.
Inizialmente la RUC – la polizia nordirlandese dell’epoca – cercò di incolpare l’IRA per l’esplosione, parlando di “autogoal”, ma il rapporto del Police Ombudsman sull’episodio gettò discredito sulla polizia perché l’atrocità non venne adeguatamente investigata.
La famiglie delle vittime sono dispiaciute perché non è stata provata completamente la collusione tra la polizia e i paramilitari lealisti.
Nel dicembre 2011, in occasione del 40° anniversario della strage, una copia della facciata del bar venne eretta in North Queen Street a Belfast, proprio dove il locale si trovava quel tragico dicembre 1971.

Council votes to name street McGurk’s Way
A street in north Belfast is to be renamed McGurk’s Way in memory of the 15 people killed when a bomb exploded at a bar 40 years ago.
The motion at Belfast City Council to change the name of Fishers Court was backed by Sinn Féin, SDLP, Alliance, UUP and PUP councillors.
Only the DUP voted against the change at Tuesday evening’s council meeting, saying a name change could increase division in the area.
Gerard Keenan’s parents were among the 15 people who died in December 1971 when a UVF bomb ripped through McGurk’s bar, injuring a further 17 people.
“It’s a great tribute and a reminder of what happened here 40 years ago and should never happen again,” he said welcoming the change.
“The people in this area know who was in that bar that night. There’s still family members living here,” he added.
A previous motion brought before the council last year was defeated, but on Tuesday it passed 33 votes to 11.

“Finally Belfast City Council has come to a decision, a proper decision and a right decision,” Mr McClenaghan explained. “It shouldn’t have been a contentious issue in the first place.”
The bombing had initially been wrongly presented by the RUC as an accidental ‘own goal’ by the IRA but a Police Ombudsman’s report into the bombing found police bias meant the atrocity was not properly investigated.
Families of those who died said they were disappointed that it fell short of identifying collusion.
In December 2011 a recreation of the bar was unveiled where it once stood in North Queen Street in Belfast.
