Uno dei leader orangisti ha avvertito che l’Unionist Forum non sta lavorando, dopo soli due mesi dal lancio.
Il Gran Cappellano orangista, il reverendo Mervyn Gibson, ha spiegato che l’organismo istituito da Peter Robinson e Mike Nesbitt per affrontare le questioni che sottendono al malcontento unionista non viene adeguatamente finanziato o amministrato.
E ha insistito che l’Orange Order non sarà disposto a fungere da “cerotto” per l’iniziativa scaturita dalla violenza e dalle proteste per la disputa sulla bandiera dell’Unione.
“Al momento stiamo lavorando in condizioni precarie” ha affermato il prominente orangista di Belfast durante un roadshow realizzato sotto gli auspici del Forum.
All’incontro di Lisburn è stato anche detto che alcuni dei sotto-gruppi costituiti non si sono ancora incontrati.
Dubbi sulla efficacia dell’esercizio sono stati inoltre avanzati dal leader del Progressive Unionist Party, Billy Hutchinson, e dall’intransigente unionista Jim Allister.
Il forum è stato costituito il 10 gennaio e ha istituito una ‘task force’ per consultare la popolazione su diverse questioni comprese le bandiere e i simboli, le parate, l’identità unionista ed le difficoltà educative nelle aree unioniste.
Ma il reverendo Gibson ha detto, di fronte a più di 300 persone: “Non credo che stia lavorando in questo momento, perché non credo che abbia ricevuto delle risorse.
“Al momento stiamo andando avanti in condizioni precarie. Credo che il forum debba essere dotato di risorse adeguate e di una buona gestione”.
Il leader orangista di Belfast ha affermato: “Abbiamo bisogno di mettere un po’ di pressione al Forum unionista.”
Jim Allister, numero uno del Traditional Unionist Voice, ritiene che i sottogruppi istituiti per esaminare questioni fondamentali, tra cui anche l’affluenza alle urne, non si sono ancora incontrati.
Allister e il reverendo Gibson sono stati tra coloro che hanno preso parte a una tavola rotonda comprendente anche il parlamentare del DUP Jeffrey Donaldson, Mike Nesbitt, il leader lealista del Progressive Unionist Party Billy Hutchinson e Henry Reilly dell’Ukip.

L’Unionist Forum è stato istituito nel mese di gennaio per esaminare la questione bandiere, i segni di alienazione crescente all’interno della comunità protestante, la scarsa affluenza alle urne tra gli unionisti e la privazione e lo scarso rendimento scolastico nella aree protestanti. La sua formazione è avvenuta oltre un mese dopo la decisione del Belfast City Council di ridurre l’esposizione della bandiera dell’Unione a solo pochi giorni designati.
Unionist Forum just isn’t working, warns Orange Order leader
A senior Orange Order leader has warned that the Unionist Forum is not working – just two months after it was launched.
Grand Chaplain the Rev Mervyn Gibson said the body set up by Peter Robinson and Mike Nesbitt to tackle issues underpinning unionist discontent is not being properly resourced or administered.
And he insisted the Order will not be prepared to act as a “sticking plaster” for the initiative which resulted from the violence and protests over the Union flag row.
“At the moment we are going on a wing and a prayer,” the Belfast senior Orange figure told a ‘roadshow’ organised under the auspices of the forum.
The meeting in Lisburn was also told some of the sub-groups established, believed to include the group dealing with flags and parades, have not yet met.
Doubts over the effectiveness of the exercise were also voiced by Progressive Unionist Party leader Billy Hutchinson and hardline unionist Jim Allister.
The forum was formed on January 10 and established a ‘task force’ to consult the public on issues including flags and symbols, parading, unionist identity and educational under-achievement in unionist areas.
But the Rev Gibson told the audience of more than 300: “I don’t believe it is working at this point in time because I don’t believe the resources have been put into it.
“At the moment we are going on a wing and a prayer. I think it needs to be properly resourced and properly administered.”
The Belfast Orange leader said: “We need to put a bit of fire under the Unionist Forum.”
Traditional Unionist Voice leader Mr Allister said he believed the sub-groups set up to examine the key issues also including voter turnout have not yet met.
Mr Allister and the Rev Gibson were among those taking part in a panel discussion which also included DUP MP Jeffrey Donaldson, Mr Nesbitt, Progressive Unionist leader Billy Hutchinson and Henry Reilly of Ukip.
