Michelle Gildernew, SF, chiede il rilascio di Gerry McGeough

La parlamentare dello Sinn Fein per Fermanagh e South Tyrone chiede l’immediato rilascio dell’ex membro IRA Gerry McGeough

McGeough è stato mandato in carcere venerdì scorso per il rentato omicidio di un soldato dell’UDR, Sammy Brush, avvenuto nel giugno 1981.

La Giledernew afferma che il processo “non sarebbe dovuto avvenire” perché il reato era stato compito prima dell’Accordo del Venerdì Santo.

L’avvocato di McGeough ha detto alla corte che si aspetta il rilascio del suo cliente entro due anni.

La Gildernew afferma che McGeough dovrebbe essere subito rilasciato e rimandato dalla sua famiglia nella Contea di Tyrone.

“E’ chiaro che un’anomalia è stata sollevata intorno ad alcuni di questi casi storici – un fatto riconosciuto dal governo britannico qualche tempo fa, insieme con l’impegno a rettificare la situazione”.

SF MP Michelle Gildernew calls for McGeough release

Sinn Fein MP for Fermanagh and South Tyrone Michelle Gildernew calls for the immediate release of former IRA man Gerry McGeough.

Mr McGeough was convicted on Friday of attempting to murder UDR soldier Sammy Brush in June 1981.

She said the prosecution “should not have happened” because the offence happened before the Belfast Agreement.

Mr McGeough’s barrister told the court he expected his client to be released within two years.

Ms Gildernew said that Mr McGeough should be released and allowed to return to his family in County Tyrone.

“It is clear that an anomaly has arised around some of these historical cases – a fact acknowledged by the British Government some time ago along with a commitment to rectify the situation.”
