L’IRA (Irish Republican Army) ha confermato che Mickey Barr, ucciso lunedì sera a Dublino, era un membro dell’organizzazione armata repubblicana.
Originario di Strabane, Contea di Tyrone, al repubblicano hanno sparato in testa nel pub da lui gestito nella capitale irlandese.
Mickey Barr nel passato è stato incarcerato a Portlaoise e lo scorso anno, insieme ad altri sei uomini, ha visto decadere l’accusa di appartenenza all’IRA.
La sua morte è stata collegata alla faida tra le famiglie criminali Kinahan e Hutch, che fino ad ora ha lasciato 6 vittime sul terreno.
Due uomini a volto coperto sono entrati nel pub Sunset House nella zona di Summerhill e hanno sparato a Mickey Barr tre volte.
Alcuni giorni prima la polizia irlandese aveva perquisito accuratamente la sua abitazione.
L’ultima serie di uccisioni sono iniziate a febbraio, quando alcuni uomini armati e vestiti con uniformi della Garda sono entrati nel Regency Hotel di Dublino sparando all’impazzata con fucili automatici.
David Byrne, figura di spicco della banda di Kinahan, è rimasto ucciso mentre gli assalitori sono riusciti a fuggire.
In una dichiarazione, l’IRA ha detto che Mickey Barr era un “volontario IRA” ma che “non era coinvolto in alcuna faida”.
Il gruppo repubblicano ha aggiunto che le armi utilizzate nell’attacco al Regency Hotel “non erano armi IRA”.
Nella dichiarazione l’IRA afferma che lo Stato ha avuto un ruolo nell’omicidio di Mickey Barr.
“Riteniamo fermamente che c’è una sorta di coinvolgimento dello Stato nello sforzo di trascinare l’IRA nella faida criminale in atto in Irlanda” dicono i repubblicani.
Un portavoce di An Garda Siochana ha detto la scorsa notte che membri di un’unità speciale erano nella zona di Gardiner Street al momento dell’attacco.
“Gardiner Street è a circa 2/3 minuti di auto dalla zona dell’omicidio” ha spiegato il portavoce.
A giugno 2015 le accuse contro Barr e altri sei uomini di appartenenza all’IRA – divenuta molto prominente nel 2012 dopo la “fusione” tra Real IRA e repubblicani di Derry e del Mid-Ulster – furono rigettate dopo che un tribunale stabilì che i loro arresti non erano legali.
Mickey Barr doveva comparire in tribunale a Dublino questa settimana per ascoltare la sentenza per aver trattato articoli rubati.
Il repubblicano sarebbe un amico di un uomo di Strabane ritenuto il sospettato chiave dell’attacco al Regency Hotel.
L’uomo, il cui nome non è stato comunicato ma sarebbe un ex prigioniero repubblicano, è stato soprannominato “Coppola” (Flat Cap in inglese, ndt) dopo che è stato fotografato a volto scoperto mentre fuggiva dal Regency Hotel indossando, appunto, una coppola.
Sarebbe stato collegato al gruppo Republican Action Against Drugs e nel 2014 fu scagionato dall’accusa di aver preso parte ad una punizione armata (Knee capping, il ferimento tramite sparo nel retro del ginocchio, Ndt) avvenuto anni prima.
La scorsa settimana la PSNI avrebbe perquisito l’abitazione di Strabane dell’uomo, insieme ad un’altra proprietà.
Una perquisizione era già avvenuta nei primi mesi dell’anno.
L’omicidio di lunedì non è il primo caso di attacco contro membri della famiglia Barr.
Nel 2002 il padre di Mickey, Colin Barr, sopravvisse dopo essere stato brutalmente picchiato e colpito da proiettili ai gomiti e alle gambe dall’INLA.
L’attacco del Regency Hotel sarebbe la vendetta della fazione della famiglia Hutch per l’omicidio di Gary Hutch eseguito in Spagna lo scorso anno da un killer dei Kinahan.
Gary era il nipote di Gerry Hutch, detto “Il Monaco” (The Monk, Ndt), a capo della banda che porta il suo nome.

Dublin murder victim Mickey Barr was ‘IRA’ member
The ‘IRA’ has confirmed that Dublin murder victim Mickey Barr was a member.
Originally from Strabane in Co Tyrone, Mr Barr was shot in the head in the Dublin pub he ran on Monday night.
The 35-year-old had served time in Portlaoise prison in the past and was acquitted of IRA membership along with six other men last year.
His death has been linked to a feud between the Kinahan and Hutch crime families which has claimed six lives to date.
Mr Barr is believed to have been shot three times when two masked men walked into the Sunset House bar, in the Summerhill area close to Croke Park, and singled him out.
Days earlier gardai had raided his Dublin home.
The latest round of gangland killings was sparked after two armed and masked men dressed in Garda uniforms stormed the Regency Hotel in Dublin in February.
David Byrne, who was a senior figure in the Kinahan gang, was killed when powerful automatic rifles were used to spray the hotel with gunfire.
In a statement, the republican group known as the ‘IRA’ said Mr Barr was an “IRA volunteer” but “was not involved in the feud whatsoever”.
It also said the guns used in the Regency Hotel attack “were not IRA weapons”.
The group claimed the Irish state may have had a hand in Mr Barr’s murder.
“We firmly believe there was some sort of state involvement in an effort to draw the IRA in to the feud with criminals in Ireland,” it said.
A spokesman for the Garda last night said members of a specialist armed unit were in the Gardiner Street area of the city centre at the time of the attack.
“Gardiner Street is approximately two/three minutes drive from the location of the fatal shooting,” he said.
In June last year charges of membership of the ‘IRA’ – which came to prominence in 2012 following a merger of the Real IRA and republicans in Derry and mid-Ulster – were dropped against Mr Barr and six other men after a court ruled their arrests were unlawful.
He was due to appear in court in Dublin this week for sentencing for admitting handling stolen goods.
Mr Barr is known to have been friendly with a fellow Strabane man who is a key suspect in the Regency Hotel attack.
The unnamed man, who is a former republican prisoner, has been dubbed ‘Flat Cap’ after he was pictured running unmasked from the Regency Hotel wearing an old style cap.
He has been linked to Republican Action Against Drugs and in 2014 was acquitted of taking part in a ‘knee-capping’ carried out several years earlier.
His Strabane home, and another property, were raided by the PSNI last week.
His home was also searched by the PSNI earlier this year.
Monday’s shooting was not the first time the Barr family has been targeted.
In 2002 his father Collie Barr survived after he was badly beaten and shot in the elbows and legs by the INLA in Strabane.
The Regency Hotel attack was later blamed on the Hutch faction in reprisal for the Kinahan murder of career criminal Gary Hutch in Spain last year.
He is the nephew of Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch who heads up the Hutch crime gang.
