La PSNI ha avvisato il vice primo ministro nordirlandese Martin McGuinness di una minaccia “reale e attiva” contro la sua vita proveniente dai gruppi repubblicani non allineati al processo i pace. Lo riferisce lo stesso McGuinness.
Ha spiegato che gli investigatori hanno messo in relazione la minaccia con la sua condanna al ritrovamento di bombe di mortaio nella sua nativa Derry e alle dichiarazioni di sostegno per il lavoro del Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI).
Il prominente politico repubblicano, che ha detto di essere stato informato della minaccia da un ufficiale della PSNI la scorsa notte, ha insistito che non si farà mettere a tacere dai gruppi repubblicani.
“Ieri sera ho ricevuto la visita della PSNI a casa, che mi ha informato di una minaccia reale e attiva contro di me proveniente da un gruppo di Derry,” ha raccontato.
“Hanno collegato la minaccia alla mia condanna per il recente tentato attacco con bombe di mortaio in città e alle altre osservazioni fatte a sostegno della PSNI.
“Sia io che la PSNI stiamo prendendo sul serio questa minaccia. Tuttavia ci sono momenti in cui la leadership politica non può restare in silenzio, e non sarò messo a tacere da minacce di questo tipo.
“Voglio difendere il processo di pace dagli attacchi provenienti da qualunque parte, che si tratti di questi gruppi o dei manifestanti lealisti per la disputa sulle bandiere negli ultimi mesi.
“Questo la dice lunga sulla mentalità di chi controlla i gruppi come quello responsabile della minaccia. Nella loro logica distorta pensano che minacciando i repubblicani irlandesi e le loro famiglie in qualche modo portano avanti la causa della riunificazione irlandese.
“Sono molto sicuro dela mia posizione. Sono anche sicuro che è il percorso condiviso dai repubblicani in tutta l’isola realmente interessati a costruire un nuovo condiviso per l’Irlanda; repubblicani che hanno messo l’Irlanda davanti all’ego, alla criminalità e al guadagno personale”.
La minaccia di morte è l’ultima di una recente ondata contro i politici della regione.
I rappresentanti eletti provenienti da tutti i partiti politici sono stati oggetto di simili intimidazioni, da parte di estremisti di entrambe le parti, nel corso della controversia riguardante la bandiera dell’Unione in Irlanda del Nord.
Ieri Conal McDevitt parlamentare del Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP), ha detto di aver ricevuto una pallottola e un biglietto di condoglianze via posta.
McDevitt, rappresentante eletto a South Belfast, ha anche detto che non si farà scoraggiare dallo sviluppo.

McGuinness told of ‘real and active threat’ against him
The PSNI have warned Stormont’s Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness of a “real and active” threat against his life from dissident republicans, the Sinn Fein veteran has said.
Mr McGuinness said detectives have linked the sinister development to the politician’s condemnation of a mortar bomb find in his native Derry on Sunday night and his associated statements of support for the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI).
The high-profile republican, who said he was informed of the threat by a senior PSNI officer last night, insisted he would not be silenced by the dissidents.
“Last night I was visited at home by the PSNI, who informed me of a real and active threat against me from a dissident group in Derry,” he said.
“They linked the threat to my condemnation of the recent attempted mortar attack in the city and other remarks made in support of the PSNI.
“Both myself and the PSNI are taking this threat seriously. However there are times when in political leadership staying silent is not an option, and I will not be silenced by threats like this.
“I will defend the peace process from attack from whatever quarter, be it these groups or the loyalist flag protesters over recent months.
“It says much about the mentality of those controlling groups like the one behind the threat that in their warped logic threatening Irish republicans and their families somehow advances the cause of Irish reunification.
“I am very sure of the ground I stand on. I am also very sure that it is the path shared by republicans across this island genuinely interested in building a new agreed Ireland, republicans who put Ireland before ego, criminality and self gain.”
The death threat is the latest in a recent spate against the region’s politicians.
Elected representatives from across the political divide have been subject to similar intimidation, from extremists on both sides, during the ongoing Union flag controversy in Northern Ireland.
Yesterday, Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) Assembly member Conall McDevitt said he had received a bullet and sympathy card in the post.
Mr McDevitt, a south Belfast representative, also said he would not be deterred by the development.
