Alcuni residenti di Waterside, preoccupati, hanno contattato Newswire segnalando la presenza di una pattuglia composta da 8 soldati nella zona di Sandville Terrace intorno alle 20 di mercoledì 14 marzo.
Un residente ha spiegato: “Stavo guidando nei pressi di Derryview Terrace e li ho visti scendere da Sandville Terrace, passare in Corody Road verso Mimosa Court. Sono sicuro al 100% che fosse l’esercito britannico. Mentre passavo accanto all’Annie’s Bar c’era una pattuglia della polizia che percorreva Irish Street ed un’altra in Spencer Road”.
Tuttavia un portavoce del Ministero della Difesa afferma che non ci sono pattuglie di soldati in Irlanda del Nord, a meno che non siano in corso ricerche specialistiche.
Il portavoce ha affermato: “Non ci sono pattuglie dell’esercito in Nordirlanda. La sicurezza è una materia della PSNI”.
Come in tutto il resto del Regno Unito, ha spiegato, la polizia può chiedere il sostegno dei militari per materie come ricerche specialistiche e gestione di armamenti esplosivi (Explosive Ordnance Disposal – EOD).
La PSNI ha confermato che nessun militare è stato richiesto o schierato a Derry settimana scorsa.
“La polizia esegue tutti i pattugliamenti e non c’è accompagnamento di soldati”, afferma un portavoce della PSNI. “I militari vengono chiamati a sostegno della polizia per questioni specifiche che richiedono specialità tecniche, come gli artificieri”.

Ministry of Defence deny British Army foot patrol claims
Concerned Waterside residents contacted Newswire after saying they spotting the 8-strong patrol in the Sandville Terrace area at around 8pm on Wednesday night.
One said: “I was driving out of Derryview terrace and I spotted them coming down from Sandville Terrace and crossing over Corody Road towards Mimosa Court. I’m 100% sure it was the British Army. As I passed Annie’s Bar there was also a police foot patrol coming down Irish Street and another police patrol on Spencer Road.”
However a spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence says there are no army patrols in Northern Ireland, unless they are conducting specialist searches.
A spokesperson for the MoD said: “There are no army patrols in Northern Ireland. Security is a matter for the PSNI.”
He also stated that just like in the rest of the UK the police can call for military support for matters such as specialist search and Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD).
The PSNI confirmed that no military were requested or deployed in the city last night.
“Police conduct all patrolling and have no military accompaniment,” said a spokesperson. “The military are only requested in support of police for specific matters where there is technical expertise such as ATO.”
